How can I burn a 23.96 timeline to DVD

Hi,

I have a 1080p24 timeline which I intend to burn to Blu-ray.

However, I also have to make a DVD.

I've read that simply making an NTSC DVD (29.976fps) in an authoring program that supports 'pulldown' will make the 23.976 work fine.

Is this true for Video Pro X6? Is there a workflow for this procedure?

Yes VPX will change the frame rates through 'pulldown' - however there is a downside to pulldown which is often seen as judder during panning shots or where there is movement across the screen.

That's great! I can get my 1080p24 project going then.

I think I read somewhere that Hollywood Movies (24p) are also burned to PAL DVD (25p). And instead of having to change the speed of the program on the timeline to 25fps, the DVD is 'flagged' so that it plays back at 25fps on a PAL system.

Is that true? If so, can VPX6 do that?

I think what you are referring to is the 'Progressive' flag which will make a DVD player outout at the correct framerate for the viewing device.

For example a DVD can have 24fps VOB video file(s) but the viewing device is 25fps.

The flag tells the DVD player to apply 3:2 pulldown and the output is 25fps - not 24fps speeded up to 25 fps.

In a way you are moving the pulldown issue from the software to the DVD player.

VPX should set the Progressive flag if the Interlace mode is set to Progressive - the option is in DVD Burning, Encoder settings, Advanced, Video tab.

However AFAICS there is no option to maintain the 24fps - it appears to want to output PAL DVD at 25fps.

Yes, I've been doing some research and some people prefer to actually make the 24p programme into a 25p on the timeline, and correct the 4% change in audio speed so that the pitch in the audio doesn't sound changed.

I'll have to try and just burn the 24p directly to a 25p DVD, just to see how it looks and sounds.

I must say, I've gotten to like the 24p look that I'm getting from my Canon 600D.

VPX6, with a little contrast and brightness adjustment, plays the native files back very smoothly.
