How can I blur the video as in imitating the unfocus lens effect?

highballblog wrote on 11/3/2012, 4:49 AM

I wanna do the tilt shift effect and need to have the same scene in normal view and a duplicate scene in blurred view. But I can't find any effect to blur the image othet than the one in Sharpness - which is not satisfactory...

Is there a plugin or effect to imitate the unfocus lens blur?

Thanks!

Hi

You have not provided sufficient information on how you are using the two video clips to create the tilt shift - I presume you are doing it like this (I have used still images and have exaggerated the blur so it shows up better here)

This is the original

Which gives this result after treating as above im MEP

The effect is only good when the camera is static or panning slowly, and the video/image is taken from a high or low angle to exaggerate the perspective.

Hi again

This is the same as below applied to a video with a vertical pan shot and a modification to the mask

Original video

Final result

The modfication to the mask was to apply a brightness curve so that as the shot panned down the level of the blur video was reduced - in effect the mask was reduced to a black background which cuts out the blurred video - as you can see in this image

Thanks johnebaker!!!

Your second example is how I want to do it.

But where can I find that effect? Effects/video effects/art filter? which of those option in there?

johnebaker wrote on 11/3/2012, 1:45 PM

Hi

The only effects applied are:-

Video on track 1:

Effects, Video Effects, Sharpness, Artistic Blur.  you only need a very small value - in the example it was set to 6

Mask on track 2:

Effects, Video Effects, Chroma key, Alpha and direction changed by clicking arrow at left end of object when selected to point to track 1

Brightness  -  Position timeline cursor at point where mask should start to fade out

Select  Effects, Video Effects, Brightness/Contrast  click the Brightness adjuster, the Keyframe controls will activate (see image)

Click the white diamond to place a keyframe marker.

Move the timeline cursor to the point where the mask should be cpmpletely faded out, add another keyframe marker then reduce the brightness down to 0 .

You can drag the keyframe markers as you require to fine adjust the timing.

hmmm... for some reason I don't have that option...and I have the original software.

johnebaker wrote on 11/4/2012, 7:02 AM

Hi

Apologies - that option appeared in MX (18)

In MEP 17 you can achieve something similar by-

Reducing the sharpness slider to 0 and

adding one of the following distortion effects

Mosaic  - the max setting I have found for it not to be conspicuous  is 6

Or

Sand - the max setting I have found for it not to be conspicuous  is 6

ach so...

I used the sharpen effect and the dillate effect and achieved this:

Someone in your team (Alan Gleeson) offered to send me a copy of your newest version to review on my site VideoEditingSoftware.com.  I'm gonna do a screencast tutorial for tilt shift then.

Thank you for your help!

Both Prodad Vitascene and Red Giant Magic Bullet Looks have plugins, that have been bundled with MEP Premiun in recent versions, with filters that will give this effect, on one track.

Clever idea John, to keyframe the brightness on the mask.

Hi Anirban

As far as I can see everything is correct with positioning, blur and the Alpha mask settings.

The only thing I can think of, is that the mask gradient is too gradual - the mask I used is  here
