Hi, do you know how I can play and edit HEVC/H.265 files in Magix 2021 premium, do I have to pay extra for this, if so, how do I go about getting this codec?
I don't know if things have changed but I don't remember ever getting a popup message for trying to import an HEVC file. It just wouldn't load into the program. For that I had to get an HEVC decoder for playback from Microsoft.
I think you can only get that from the Microsoft store now. Then once playing within MEP if you wanted to export to HEVC then you would get the popup from Magix for the encoder when you selected the export option for that wrapper which has to be bought via Magix.
Both licences are fairly cheap but separate as not everyone importing HEVC will want to export to HEVC, especially if they are uploading to somewhere like YouTube that prefers MP4.
Ray.

@CubeAce I got this quite a while ago, i know it did help n my general pc stuff but can't remember if it changed how MEP deals with these files, it's cheap but why you have to pay isn't right
I paid microsoft 0.79 for HEVC video extensions, i now can play these files in windows 10. But they don't open in Magix 2021 premium. I can import them on the timeline check the video properties which is d cinelike 10 bit.
. . . . . I can import them on the timeline check the video properties which is d cinelike 10 bit . . . . .
This is a different issue - the video files may be an unsupported format. Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.
Thanks for all the support. This is the information of the HEVC file which I'll paste down below. When I tried to export the file as HEVC that's when I got the activation message. Hopefully if I pay I'll be able to edit HEVC..

. . . . Magix doesn't help by failing to include HEVC in the "MPEG-4" export menu! . . . .
It does, when you click on the option you also get the HEVC activation required message whether you are using the Microsoft HEVC for import or not..
John, sorry, I was a bit cryptic. HEVC is (one of the many) MPEG-4, so it's illogical to have an MPEG-4 option and a separate HEVC option. The export options should be MP4 (AVC/H264) and MP4 (HEVC/H265). When HEVC came along, it looks like somebody has just plonked it into the export menu without thinking about what options were already there.
That is the Microsoft one that they used to give away until I suspect MPEG LA had a word with them.
I think that second one is to help with your phone's files that may be a proprietary variation or add on to the HEVC seeing as you need the HEVC codec for it to work.
All these codecs are normally jointly developed by several companies and as the developed world manufactures less physical goods they rely more heavily on being paid for intellectual property development. Each would get paid a slice of the fee. You can always ask the BBC for a reduction in your licence fee 🤣🤣.
I will try hard to remember that anything that ends with C probably stands for Codec (except AVI of course 🤔🤔). I will just have to remember that H264 is Advanced Video Codec and not to be mixed up with AVI.
For the sake of @fergie, I will try to explain the difference.
A wrapper is like a container or can with no label on it listing its contents. Inside could be any one of a number of different codecs. There will be a video codec and an audio codec. Sometimes the video codec has a different audio codec attached to it and on occasion the audio codecs can also cause problems.
Some Wrappers are best used with Apple operating systems while others are best to use on computers running Windows. A lot of modern mov. files for instance are not that compatible with Windows simply because of the way the codec inside is implemented. Such files often need converting to a format that can be read by a Windows based machine using a convertor like Handbrake.
In between all of these are other various codecs, some specific to one model of phone or camera or for use in various equipment such as DVD players.
Sometimes when looking at buying a new camera it is worth looking to see if the codecs it is using can be supported by your software. The same can be true when looking at screen capture software or recording something from a video chat / conference application or game play recorder. All of which can give an editing program a hard time at trying to read the files.
Further apologies as I got called away during my reply and missed a bunch of replies before I sent my competed answer.
So it was recorded in D Cine-Like.
Would it be possible to put a clip onto Google drive for us to test? I think Movie Studio should be able to use the 10 bit files as they are 4:2:2 and BT.709 but there may be a problem elsewhere.
Yes Ray i'm using DJI D Cinelike I was hoping to experiment with the file. I'll try to put it on to Google drive for you to test. So paying for the HEVC may not work?
I assume whether you use the standard profile from the drone or D-Cine-Like that it will still record in HEVC or is the standard profile recorded as MP4?
I have a DJI Osmo Pocket but it does not have D Cine-Like or record at 10 bit and only records to mov. or MP4.
What it does do is record a 'Flat Profile' file which is similar to the D-Cine-Like to look at but not 10 bit. To be honest the basic colour profile is so reasonable with the Osmo Pocket I have never felt the need to go to the flat profile.
I would have expected a 10 bit file to be 4:4:4 which would have been a real problem but a 4:2:2 based file with a BT 709 colour profile rather than 4:2:2 with a BT 2020 colour profile should in theory work. I just don't know yet why it isn't.
H-264 (MP4) is your best bet for trouble free editing as the codec is less compressed and less stressful on any system trying to edit it but may not be able to do D Cine-Like.
A quick internet search does not say it can't be done, just that most Video Editing suites can't cope with the files.
10 bit HEVC on the other hand can be handled but it may be a hardware limitation as to whether it will work as well as needing the codec according to Microsoft.
. . . . You can choose the format MP4 or MOV . . . .
I have a test video clip with the same video specs as the DJI clip, HEVC 10 bit, and it import and exports in MEP 2021 on purchase of the HEVC codec from Magix.
If you change to the MOV container file format, you may need to install Quicktime depending on the video codec chosen - AVC/h.264 does not need QT, h.265/HEVC probably will not either.
. . . . it looks like somebody has just plonked it into the export menu without thinking about what options were already there . . . .
The 'error' occurred long before HEVC was in existence - the export entry for MP4 should have been Export as AVC/h.264, however it was generally accepted that MP4 meant AVC/h.264. AVCHD is also lumped in with MP4 which is another 'error' as the file format is .mts or .mts2
I have sent a request to you for the file as you didn't make it a public link.
Others here have different systems to my own that may also benefit from file sharing. If the file is for any reason sensitive in any way then fair enough keep it for requests from the forum. I will of course delete the file from my system once I have finished testing it.
Hi gid, yes there is no sound on DJI drone footage, what software programme did you play it in. Do you have the HEVC codec installed.

@fergie I have installed the 2 codecs i shared above , apart from those i have nothing else added apart from the programs i have, I have Quicktime & yrs ago i had to buy a codec from Magix, i think that was something to do with AVCHD, can't remember, Quicktime & the AVCHD one have nothing to do with this but i do faintly remember having to buy one for the HEVC export, maybe that's he one i'm mistaking for AVCHD, If you're getting a notice to buy it's only a few £s i think,
