I have purchased a new computer and I have installed Magix Movie Edit Pro Plus 2020 to my new computer, however, once in the editor, I am getting a pop-up message to enter an HEVC Codec Activation #. Where do I find such a number?
Are you trying to import files that are HEVC (H265) encoded or trying to export a project to HEVC?
Unlike some other codecs The Motion Picture Graphics Group that own the rights to the HEVC codec only allow some developers free use of their codec to put into players only like VLC video player.
That is purely to promote the use of the codec. If people can play such videos on their machines with players like VLC for free then they are more likely to use the codec on either their phones or cameras to record their video as opposed to using either the mov or MP-4 container format that uses up more memory card space.
With me so far?
Unfortunately if you wish to use the codec as an individual to work with within a video editor or just to see the video files thumbnails in explorer you will have to pay a licence fee for the privilege. For playback within a video editor or to see and play such a file using the Windows Film and TV app then you should go to the Microsoft store and pay for the playback codec.
If you want to export to HEVC in Movie Studio then when you first try to export to that file format you will get a popup asking you to pay Magix for the encoder. The encoder is slightly more expensive than the decoder. but the encoder must come from Magix as it will be keyed to be used in their products. The payment (or most of it) will then be passed on to the Motion Picture Graphics Group to help pay for the future development of the Codec or future codecs.
Some programs do include the codec in the price of the software but Magix has always given their customers the choice. Personally, although I have both codecs in case I need them, I seldom use them.
Were you importing HEVC videos into MEP 2020 when it was installed on the old computer?
If so then you should have an email from Magix with the serial number for the codec activation - the serial number begins with HEVCIC-
If not then, for MEP 2020, you need to purchase the HEVC codec from Magix, there should be a link in the dialog box that you are seeing to take you to the purchase page at Magix.
From the MEP 2020 manual: The codec requires a fee-based activation the first time you import or export HEVC material.
John EB Forum Moderator---I am having the same problem. The dialog box does pop up asking me to purchase HEVC-Coded from Magix but nothing happens when I click the link and I cannot find on Magix website where/how to purchase this feature. Any ideas?
After I had written my previous reply I realised I had never activated the HEVC codec in my installation of Video Pro X so I opened a project, chose to Export it as HEVC. The activation screen opened (this activation is free in VPX) and my computer linked to the Magix server and activation occurred. So, for me at least, there is not a problem at the activation server so "something else" is blocking your connection.
In addition to what @johnebaker has written, you say you turned antivirus off, but what about your firewall?
