Hardware Acceleration Failing

mike_b58 wrote on 3/6/2025, 10:49 PM

I'm using Photostory 2025 after upgrading from 2024. If I try to export using hardware acceleration the process will eventually fail before completion with a message to try again after disabling hardware acceleration (or words to that effect). On small projects it might complete. If using software encode then export will complete but it takes forever. Same thing happened on the 2024 version. I am using AMD based PC with radeon GPU. Drivers are all up to date. Is this a known issue....maybe AMD based?

Hi

. . . .  Is this a known issue....maybe AMD based? . . . .

Possibly, depending on the GPU's present in the system, for which we need more detailed information, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) you are working with if this is a laptop.

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Check the Windows Reliability monitor to see if there are any crash/error messages for Photostory recorded, if so post a screen shot of the error message - see this short tutorial on how to use the Reliability monitor.

As the issue occurs when exporting:

  1. Try changing the Video mode in the program settings Device options tab to CPU and try exprting again, if this completes then it would suggest a GPU issue.

  2. What video format, codec and resolution are you importing to the timeline - to help with this download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips causing the issue and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

  3. Which export preset are you using and did you change any of its parameters?

Hardware ..... GPU AMD Radeon RX6800GT. CPU AMD Ryzen 9 5900X .. all current drivers.

OS .... Win11 all windows updates applied

Photostory doesn't crash and there is no error in reliability monitor. The export fails and I get an error message suggesting disable hardware acceleration..

Export - HEVC - 4k with default settings apart from best quality rather than balanced.

Export works using software encoding only.

@mike_b58

Hi

Thanks for the addition PC specs.

. . . . all current drivers . . . .

Are you using the Adrenalin (25.3.1) or PRO Edition (22.Q4) driver?

As the software encoding is successful, this would suggest there is something, eg image, video, audio, or an effect that is tripping Photostory up.

Diagnosing where is going to be a problem as Photostory only indicates the export %age, so getting an accurate time point at which the export is currently being processed, is not easy.

Export the video again using the RX6800GT and note the %age value at which the export fails. Use this, in timeline mode, to determine the approximate timeline position to look at, remove any effects applied and try exporting again,

If there is nothing confidential in the project, zoom in on this area to show about 1 minute either side of the calculated timeline position and take a screenshot and post it in a reply.

Adrenalin (25.3.1).

The failure point is inconsistent. I've tried it quite a few times and occasionally it doesn't fail at all.

The project is around 180 minutes long and takes many hours just using software encoding....but it's never failed with hardware acceleration turned off.

Hi

. . . . . The failure point is inconsistent . . . .

If there are video clips recorded with an iPhone/Samsung or other mobile device or are screen recordings, on the timeline use MediaInfo to analyse the video clips, as I mentioned in point 2 in my first comment.

If you see this line in the video section of the analysis:

Framerate mode: Variable

This can cause several different issues, in many video editors.

Converting to Constant Frame Rate using a converter such as Handbrake or AVIDemux usually fixes issue with VFR video and use these in your project.

Tutorial links for how to do this:

  • Handbrake

  • AVIDemux, - use the Page links option to jump to the appropriate section

To avoid future issues with mobile phone and/or screen recording software videos, check the recording settings for an option to record Constant Frame Rate

I tried mediainfo and framerate on videos is constant. I'm going to experiment using mpeg4 instead of HEVC and see if it still has failures. I have noticed that mpeg4 gives better results than HEVC anyway using the default bitrates. There seems to be more artifacts during slide transitions (for example) when using HEVC.

Can you copy and paste the complete results from the Text view of the MediaInfo data? Because that will give rather more details about codecs used etc., it might give us more of a hint as to what is the core problem for you.

Hi

Thanks for the MediaInfo data.

The 2 AVC files look 'normal' apart from the 4096 x 2160 resolution which is a true 4K video resolution, the other, often called '4K', and more common is 4K UHD with a resolution of 3840 x 2160.

The WMV file however is very odd :-

Overall bit rate mode                    : Constant
Overall bit rate                         : 13.8 Mb/s
Maximum Overall bit rate                 : 101 Mb/s
Frame rate                               : 30.000 FPS

Video
. .
Bit rate mode                            : Constant
Bit rate                                 : 100.0 Mb/s

Width                                    : 1 920 pixels
Height                                   : 1 080 pixels
Display aspect ratio                     : 16:9
Frame rate                               : 30.000 FPS
. . .

The bitrate values emboldened are way too high. For a typical WMV file, of this resolution and frame rate, these values would be more in the region of 5 to 8 Mbs and 8 to 12 Mb/s respectively.

Is this file a conversion from another format, or a stock file downloaded from the Internet?

Is RX 6800GT the correct GPU name, AFAICS from the AMD lists of GPU there is no such version they list RX6800 and RX 6800XT?

From the specs that I can find, GPU it supports '4K' encoding for h.264/AVC and h.265/HEVC, however I can find no definitive information on whether this is the true 4K 4096 x 2160 or 4K UHD 3840x2160.

I suspect that the issue is a combination of the 4K files and/or the WMV file causing a glitch with the RX6800.

A conversion of the WMV file to a different format eg h.264/AVC at 20 Mb/s 30fps video encoding, mp4, and using this in the project would be worth testing.

I seem to have less issues with encoding to mpeg4 rather than HEVC so will stick to that. "Only" 2 fails out of around 10 tests. It also seems to be a better-quality output than HEVC anyway and the extra size doesn't worry me too much. Thanks for your help.
