Green Screen General Advice

Xenofex2 wrote on 11/17/2023, 11:31 AM

I have started looking at some free ‘green screen effects’ on Youtube that I could possibly use in future projects.

My question then is if download some and then remove the green background and crop the clips now, is it possible to export the clip with a transparent background to build up my own library? However I have just had a trial attempt with a green screen clip and seems that this possibility does not seem to work in MEP? (21.0.1.104) or was that me?

Alternatively, I could though use an online program (like Unscreen) to remove. But after using something like this program, could I then use MEP to crop the larger movie file but then still export each smaller clip from MEP with a transparent background image?

I know that there is the file format of ‘png’ for still images without background, and thus wonder whether there is similar file format for a movie file which would then enable me to pre-prepare some short png-style-movie clips?

Would this work?

Hi George

. . . . is it possible to export the clip with a transparent background to build up my own library . . . .

This is not possible MMS does not support exporting with Alpha channel, also see this topic re green screen colours and what can happen.

Hi.

Depending on the effects you are after, have you thought about creating your own with the free Boris FX Particle Illusion Program?

I use it quite often.

Hi George

+1 for @CubeAce comment if they are the sort of effects you want.

For other types of effects, such as animated lower thirds graphics with Alpha channel, removal of unwanted 'intrusions' in video eg removing people, overhead cables etc I would use Blender which has some very good video editing capablilities, though with a steep learning curve.

Hi George,

I suggest BluffTitler for making up effects. You can export to AVI with transparency and keep those for use in MEP.

There is a wealth of information, including working examples for most everything, including green screens. As well, there are BluffTitler template packs called BixPacks that you can purchase. For both the program and BixPacks, watch for sales, usually at a 30% discount.

The learning curve is only as steep as you want it to be. I use the example projects and BixPacks for learning and making my own.

I have posted some examples on my YouTube channel. Here is the second one:

The others are EX001 and EX008 to 010 and 012.

Here's a couple of short examples of what I do with Particle illusion..

Normally I do these for my Grandson and with this exception not uploaded to the net.

Thankyou for those suggestions and I now definitely definitely will have a re-think.

My initial idea had come from the fact that this week I had seen a video in which I realised that a green screen effect had been used (tv controls). As over the years I had extracted ‘head’ shots of family, and household items for projects, but then kept a copy of the resultant png file in a folder for potential future use, that I thought I might do the same with transparent background video effects. My trouble is that as I am more administrative focused, I would spend more time in creating a library of effects than actually using them.

However thankyou everyone, I now have an early New Year Resolution and will re-focus.

I will also have another look at ‘Particle Illusion’ Ray. Seeing those clips it does remind us that I had watched your Harry Potter video some while back. Pretty sure that I did look at ‘Particle Illusion’ at the time but felt that the learning curve was too steep for my admin type mind, but will certainly give it another look.

I also remember ages ago reading a suggestion on the Forum on ‘Intros’ and pretty sure that it was as a result of your suggestion John, that I did buy Bluff Titler and now have a number of Bix Packs. Whilst I have used that program a few times, I must admit that my use has been very basic. As a result I really appreciate those links showing what you have achieved with the program and so giving us new ideas.

I really feel enthused. Thankyou.

George

Hi George.

In the past I too thought about and started making a library of effects I thought I may need for future use. In the end I had a lot of used drive space and the effects I created were never quite what I envisioned I needed at the point of using them, so I had to start from scratch each time I needed a new one.
