Grainy images

I am converting old 8mm movie film to DVD. The old film is run trhough a camera and the projected images are picked up by a Sony digital video camera.  This data is then inputted into my 2013 Magix Edit Pro Program and a DVD is produced. Unfortunately the DVD is very grainy and not as clear as the old 8mm film.  From research it appears that I need software with 8mm grain eliimination technology. Do Any of Magix products have this feature?

Hi

There is a very good plugin for MEP available from Neatvideo for degraining/denoising video.

Depending on how bad the grain is the plugin may be OK.

8mm film is very grainy - if you look at one frame with a magnifying glass or loupe you will see that the image is very bad.  The reason the film looks sharp when projected is because the grain is random and the eye perceives the image as being much sharper when seen at 18 - 24 fps.  There is also the issue of syncing the film framerate to the recording framerate - if these are out of sync then there are potential issues with banding and partial frames ie the camera has recorded a frame when the projector is in between frames.

If you are watching the DVD on a Full HD TV then you have the additional problem of upscaling a low resolution image (720 x 576 (PAL) or 720 x 480 (NTSC) to 1920 x 1080.  This can introduce blockiness and upscaling artefacts which make the image worse.
