Go Pro Audio Issues in Movie Edit Pro 2016

muzz wrote on 7/11/2022, 3:35 AM

Audio "buzzing" when Importing Go Pro Hero 8 Footage.

The image attached shows the Audio wave having blocks which causes the "buzzing". The Audio is perfect (as expected) when the video is played in "Films & TV" (the Windows video playing software).

Video Properties are:
Data rate: 45002kbps
Total bitrate: 45192kbps
Frame rate: 50.94 frames/second

Audio Properties are:
Bit rate: 189kbps
Channels: 2 (stereo)
Audio sample rate: 48.000 kHz

Then in Movie Edit Pro 2016 the Movie Settings:
Audio Sample Rate: 48000
Video Settings: NTSC FullHD 60p 16:9 (1920*1080 ; 59.94fps)

After searching the Forms, the possible Fixes may be in the "Audio playback" in program settings, or in import/export settings but my attempts have not been successful.

I am using a HP Envy x360 on windows 11.

Please help me solve this issue

Hi

Which codec is the GoPro using for the audio?

If you have not done so - download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

A screen shot of the Program settings, Playback tab may also help.

Hi, and welcome to the user to user forums.

First, if you don't already have this app please download MediaInfo and use the text view option to copy and paste the files data back here as you have either made a typo in your question making the frame rate of the clip an invalid frame rate (50.94 fps) or there is something wrong with the file.

Once you download MediaInfo all you have to do is right click any video file on your computer and you will see MediaInfo appear in the menu that appears. Clicking that link will bring up the data analysis for that video.

The data from MediaInfo will be a lot more helpful to us in trying to pin down what may be wrong if it is a problem with the file.

But I suspect you have typed the frame rate incorrectly as further down it seems the Movie Edit Pro has correctly read the frame rate.

'Buzzing' sounds like something in the audio chain of your computer may be wrong. Normally any audio sound problems associated with reading the 'blocks' of audio as they pass through the program result in rapid but distinct clicking sound rather than a buzzing sound.

Other things you can do to get help quicker is to supply a short video clip for us to test by uploading a clip to google drive and posting a link to the file back here.

Ray.

There was a typo in my first post, the frame rate is 59.94 (not 50.94) sorry.
My Laptop is a HP Envy x360 Convertible 13-ay0xxx with a AMD Ryzen 7 4700U with Radeon Graphics            2.00 GHz processor. The Audio does make a high frequency of clicking sounds (not a constant buzzing). Here are screen shots of the playback and video/audio tabs in program settings.

@muzz @johnebaker

The good news is I see nothing wrong with the video file. For a Go-Pro file that is unusually good news but I have copied John Baker in just in case I'm wrong.

I'm afraid I'm not up on either MEP 2016 (two years before I started using MEP myself) or an AMD based system but looking at your two screen shots.

In the left hand screen shot you can un-tick the Automatic Interlace processing as your files are progressive not interlaced.

In the second screen shot try increasing the audio buffer preview size to match the multi-track size.

This may not get rid of the clicks completely but should at least lessen the amount of them.

To get rid of them completely increase the amount of buffers by one amount at a time (normally doubling the amount each time you try) and then try playing the files again. To expand the buffers by any amount may effect playback response times so try not to overdo it more than needed.

Don't for now touch the rest of the settings and see how that goes.

Report back if nothing changes,.🤞

Hi @CubeAce

Unfortunately that has not solved the issue. All that changes is the frequency of clicks (as you expected).

Former user wrote on 7/11/2022, 6:35 AM

@muzz Hi, In your Video/Audio settings you have Audio -6db when importing, is there a reason for that, ?

You could share a problem file on Google Drive or some other sharing site so people can try it out,

Hi.

Yes the amount of clicks decreases as the buffer sizes increase but the downside is less responsiveness from the program. Delays in commands over responses to keyboard or mouse controls. The more buffers in use the worse that delay becomes. Try now increasing just the buffer number to 6. That may get rid of more clicks but also decrease responsiveness of the program When you hit play foe instance it may take a second to respond.

Another reason this can happen is a slow hard drive where the files reside or it is doing too much work.

Do not have files in use on something like Dropbox or One Drive as they will be read far too slowly.regardless of your internet speed. Nothing in the settings will help in that instance.

Ideally they should be on a fast USB 3 drive and not the C: drive, or if the laptop can have a second M2 drive installed that would be better for the project files to reside on.

Hi,

I checked your file in MEP2015 and had the same problem as you. I checked it in MEP2021 and VPX14 and it works fine.

I think that you will either need to convert your files using Handbrake or upgrade to a newer version of MEP, now called Movie Studio.

Before John CB had tested with MEP 2015 I was going to ask if you were using additional hard drives or not.

Then I remembered in the specs for your laptop it said it had Windows 11 installed.

MEP 2016 may not be running well on Windows 11 with hardware acceleration turned on. Try turning hardware acceleration off first in the program settings and see if things improve before deciding whether you need to upgrade MEP yet or not. Even if you do upgrade my points on the need for those drives and file locations are still relevant.

Hi

Just to confirm - this is an issue with MEP 2016 and GoPro video, other GoPro video I have does the same, other video from a different camera with similar specs to the GoPro imports fine.

The issue is caused by the Timecode channel, MEP 2016 and earlier do not handle it properly. Strip this out, I used Handbrake with the audio codec set to AAC PassThru, and the video imports as normal.

I wonder why that would cause audio clicks with the older version of MEP?

Hi Ray

. . . . I wonder why that would cause audio clicks with the older version of MEP? . . . .

AFAIK, the timecode channel was introduced with the Hero 5 which was released late 2016, after MEP 2015 and 2016 release.

I suspect that MEP 2015 and 2016, and probably 2017, are misinterpreting this as an audio channel, later versions recognise the time code channel 'in a fashion' and ignore it.

The reason I say 'in a fashion' is because VPX can read time codes that are present in a video clip, however it cannot read the time code from the GoPro videos.

Knowing that the 'time code' channel is a 'GoPro special' and there are several scripts available on the Internet for extracting data from the MP4 file, I suspect that the 'time code' channel contains the 'telemetry data' from the various sensors that may be present in the GoPro - eg accelerometer, GPS, etc.

I do stand to be corrected on where the telemetry data is stored.

Hi John EB,

I have a GoPro Hero 5. I just checked MEP2015 and strangely, there was no audio but the waveform looked correct. I then imported a clip from my cell phone and the GoPro sound now worked. Imported another GoPro file, didn't work, rearranged clips, it worked. Very strange.

I just noticed that my cell phone has been recording UHD but the files on my computer show as FHD, Audio Sample rate of 44.1 kHz. Two of three video clips were 30fps, the other 29.97; actual is 15fps for some reason. The phone uploads to Google and I was downloading from there. I guess that Google converts the uploaded videos. I'll have to look into this.

Hi John

...actual is 15fps for some reason.

Maybe because the phone records Variable Frame Rate and that is the average or mean?
