General discussion on add-ons

Both VPX 14 and my copy of MEP 2022 have stopped being able to send crash reports back to Magix.

If have tried looking at the exceptions section for virus scanning and nothing has changed.

Is anyone else having this problem? All I get is Magix cannot connect to the Internet at this time. Please check your internet settings.

Still happening?

Hi.

It happened for a long period (months) but is now working with VPX 14. I have not had a crash with MEP 2022 recently so I don't know about that program. I tend to get more crashes when the program is trying to access more than 32 GBs of ram. I have done a lot of mem tests of the ram and it has passed all tests so far so I'm not sure what is going on. If I allow time to pass before adding additional effects or alterations of the programs as they approach using 32GBs of ram then the programs don't crash. I'm assuming there is a parity error occurring between the two matched sets but difficult to tell as Windows has no problem with it but I don't have other programs that use that amount of ram. Or it could be the use of a third party program within the editors. I'm not sure.

Thinking about it a bit more, when using my copy of Boris Particle Illusion, that often goes beyond the 32 GBs of usage and that never crashes. So still puzzled at this point.

Ray.

A head scratcher for sure. And yes, Particle Illusion can eat up a ton of RAM for sure. Just starting the standalone, it grabs 9GB. But I've had it open at at 31.2GB being used of my 32GB and it just ran like crap. I guess page filing using the HD as additional RAM.

CubeAce wrote on 4/1/2023, 3:44 PM

@Reyfox

Particle Illusion runs great on my machine since I increased my ram. Rendering to a high quality 4K file takes about twice as long as the clip length. In the editor itself it runs about half speed on the first pass then runs in real time.

Boris Title effects, if I alter any of the presets is the killer for me regularly going past the 28GB mark. If I leave that open in a project working within a clip, rendering at that point slows down to about one frame per second or slower on export even if the clip plays OK in the editor. But I just love the amount of textures and lighting it can provide. It's as well I don't have a Boris suite of effects or I would be trying to link the particle generator to the titles. I need to lean more about splines which I don't fully understand despite watching numerous tutorials.

I take care to run both in draft mode for editing. I'd hate to think what type of machine I would need to have either set to a higher setting. I should add I only have the stand alone version of the particle illusion so can't combine them. They have recently increased the amount of Illusion presets and some of the new ones are very convincing effects.

Oh, PI runs without any issues on my computer. It can take a up a lot of system RAM if it's there. But it kept on running.

I don't use the standalone though. I use the plugin, which allows more precise work when using it in a video. BorisFX Continuum Complete is an amazing piece of software that I've had for a few years now. For the price, there is no way to get everything it has at that price. And Boris keep on pushing it further and further.

CubeAce wrote on 4/2/2023, 3:13 PM

@Reyfox

According to the Boris Effects website my graphics card is not even on the supported list so I feel privileged any of them work 😅. Although I'm aware of the advantages of running an effect as a plugin I still find I can use the effects I have to some degree and have fun with. I normally export to Pro-Res as I find blending can be better. It is more difficult to get the particles to the correct size and position and requires a few more steps for a give scene and are far from being overly photo realistic.

The video below has no sound track due to some of the content having copyrighted music in the background so I just cut the sound entirely.

@CubeAce don't worry about your graphics card not being supported. I made a comment in their forum ages ago about how they haven't updated the list. That list has cards in it from 2008. Certainly anything relatively new will be more than fine.

They said that they would fix this... but they haven't yet.

There are many people who use PI standalone. Heck, it's a real time killer for me when I open it and start looking at all the particles and what they can do.

I've rendered in the standalone to ProRes 422 with RGB+Premultiplied Alpha with never an issue, and PI will only render to ProRes. But it's the other plugins in Continuum that I use the most. And there are a lot I haven't even looked at yet. But using it as a plugin, you know the advantages of that. Sadly, in at least MEP2022, it can not be launched as a plugin. Nor in VPX12.

Nice work btw!

CubeAce wrote on 4/2/2023, 6:55 PM

@Reyfox

Speaking of updating. Their tutorials do not reflect the new layout of the programs. I have to continuously stop and start the tutorials to try to figure out where the sections they are pointing to are in the new version. But I am learning, slowly. I think the reason some effects don't work in MEP or VPX is the lack of AI and some of the graphics layouts do not appear as they would in Vegas or Adobe.

I thought the price for Illusion plugin was a bit steep but then on reading it comes with a lot of additional Mocha add-ons for object tracking etc but again that possibly would not be possible within VPX or MMS. I do like the quality of the output though and that it makes good use of balancing workload between Processor and graphics cards. Sometimes I find getting a convincing blending method the most challenging.

@CubeAce MMS/VPX are not OFX compliant, something that they should work on getting fully implemented, at least in VPX. And even though Resolve uses OFX, Vegas handles working with PI to me, much better than Resolve in some of the plugins. Several plugins work better (easier moving point locations) in Vegas. If you want to learn more about PI, look at the webinars and other presenters.

.

As you point out, Mocha is included in PI and most of Continuum plugins. I don't have Mocha Pro, but my collaborator does in Belgium.

I got into the BorisFX ecosystem back with Vegas Pro 15 Suite. It came with some plugins. So did 16 Suite and 17 Suite. I was emailing Boris about a problem I was having. They got right back to me, asked which plugins I had, and offered me a discounted price for the Continuum Complete that was a no-brainer. Way below the listed or even Black Friday sale price. I bought the perpetual, and don't regret it in the least.

You can spend hours upon hours just exploring the different plugins. But it's best to have pen and paper to write things down, at least for me. Otherwise, I will forget!

I don't have any "vices", and video editing is something that is a part of my life. So, averaging the cost of a plugin/gimbal/camera lens over a couple of years, it's nominal. So I'll buy. Like exploring different editors, when basically, one will do most of what I need.

CubeAce wrote on 4/3/2023, 9:06 AM

@Reyfox @johnebaker

Hi.

I have got past the stage in that webinar but I get your point.

I think MMS and VPX can use OFX although possibly not fully compliant.

That is where I get confused. MMS (18 onwards) and VPX are not listed as OFX capable but both Neat Video and New blue (all effects) are listed as OFX effects. Neat video says there are no current issues with using their plugin with MMS or VPX.

Boris Title Studio is also listed as an OFX plugin within Vegas and opens in both my copy of MEP 2022 and VPX 14 and works in both as well as Vegas. It works better in Vegas than MEP or VPX so maybe it is a matter of degree.

For instance In Vegas Pro 18 I can see the background clip within the Boris editing screen while in MEP and VPX I can't.

In Vegas the compiling and render is faster than with MEP or VPX and seems to use a lot less computer resources.

My copy of MEP is a generation behind my copy of VPX14 but seems to cope better. It's as if with each upgrade more capabilities are taken away from the programs as MEP 2021 and VPX11 seemed to cope with the titling equally well but could still not show the clip image in the background within the programs editing screen.

Ray.

That is odd unless it has been removed - though unlikely.

OpenFX support for plug-ins with OFX interfaces from third party providers was introduced in MEP 2018 and VPX 9 (IIRC) - this resulted in the new style interface as shown below - background vs old, inset.

Added: I have the Hitfilm Movie Essentials pack installed and it is OFX.

Hi Ray

I suspect many of the Magix ones are also OFX.

On further checking I have the following working OFX effects installed:

  • Hitfilm Movie Essentials
  • HitFilm toolkit pack
  • NB Elements
  • NB Filters
  • Titler Pro 2
  • Boris Mocha (trial)*

* This one launches, however do not see the changes - will investigate more.

. . . . why so many specific variations for different video editors? . . . .

I have to agree a bit that the UI in different editors that support OFX can be different. But Particle Illusion 2023 OFX plugin, while it shows up, I get an error message when trying to open the PI FX Browser.

With Boris transitions, black screen in the FX Browser.

NBFX transitions (I have full TotalFX7) do not appear. Why is there a special Magix version of TFX7 with them removed?

BCC+Looks doesn't work. You need to access the FX Browswer.

Mocha Continuum in any of the plugins does load, but when in the Mocha plugin, ERROR appears and it disappears.

There are more OFX plugins that do not work in the Magix ecosystem. They work just fine in Vegas and Resolve Studio, two different editing programs.

And everything works in Hitfilm Pro 2021.3

These 3 different editors work as they should with OFX plugins. This is an issue with MMS/VPX.

CubeAce wrote on 4/3/2023, 2:27 PM

@Reyfox

Surely that's because MMS / VPX are not officially supported by Boris. Even those editors that are supported, not all get full compatibility.

A quick look at the OFX website shows some of the problems faced and why some programs seem more capable than maybe others due to the founding companies of OFX.

The more I look into it, the more surprised I am that any of it works.

Hi

Considering the issues you are having and Rays link to the OFX article this line:-

. . . . OpenGL acceleration of rendering . . . .

- may be very relevant.

Wading through the reference documentation for OFX, I can find no reference to which versions of OpenGL support which features, this has been an issue that has cropped up several times in the forum for other none OFX issues.

It is obvious that some features of the OFX API are different between systems which do and do not support OpenGL.

@CubeAce it was like with FXHome's Ignite Pro. Not every single feature was available to OFX supported editors. Only Hitfilm Pro supported everything. The List of what is supported by which editing software.

But you notice who is absent from that list, even if it supported just one thing? Magix. I am not saying that MMS should be OFX compatible. Considering how much Boris costs, even the Units, most would not opt to buy. But if they implement it in VPX, having it in MMS shouldn't be an issue.

But VPX should have better OFX support.

CubeAce wrote on 4/3/2023, 7:09 PM

@Reyfox

Possibly, but if New Blue plug-ins are all working within VPX (and they seem to be on my system) Then it would seem it is more up to the developer to want to make that happen.

With Magix now having Vegas and price increments per program going MMS / VPX / Vegas Edit / Vegas Pro / Vegas Post it is possible that Boris has the view that they would get more custom from those willing to spend more on the editor and effectively having to do two versions for one company.

When you look at the compatibility chart you notice the two NLEs that are supported most are the industry leaders. That's not surprising considering Boris Effects history.

The other thing I notice is that there are similar plug-ins in the other third party effects in my system to the ones listed in the Boris effects section. How different they are in use or quality I have no way of comparing. But Boris is still the leader for rotoscoping and planer tracking.

I also noticed anything posted on that OFX website seems to be more than a few years old.

Could any of the mods please retitle this tropic. Within 3 posts it has gone off on a completely different direction and it is annoying when a new post appears, only to find it is unrelated to the topic title.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

@CubeAce does NBFX transitions work in VPX? I don't know if there are certain capabilities an editor has to have to be OFX compliant, and/or what part lies with the maker of the plugin to make it more compatible with a certain editing software. I do think it might go "hand in hand", with both being a part of it. Maybe more so on the editing software.

I do have several OFX plugins as mentioned above. The more "simpler" ones work more completely than the complex ones like some of the Boris, Sapphire plugins which have a wealth of customization.

NeatVideo keys their software to particular editing software, so in itself, it isn't OFX. There is an OFX version that will work in OFX hosts, but the cost is much much more. Hitfilm's Ignite Pro 5, which has all the plugins does work, but Magix isn't listed. It's a mote point since Artlist decided to end development. Nice move on their part....not.

Either way, better plugin support should be a part of VPX.

@Reyfox

Hi,

...does NBFX transitions work in VPX?

No. This is shown on the NB site and has always been indicated on the Magix site for whichever products had TotalFX bundled with them.

I use Pixelan plugins, including SpiceMaster Pro3 (transitions), which is phenomenal. They are not OFX but work very well.

Also, I find LUTS to be next to useless compared to Pixelan FilmTouch Pro for colour grading. Again, not OFX, but very powerful. With LUTS, you don't know what they did to get the effect; with FilmTouch, you do and you have full access to the controls to modify them.

As for some others, like Boris Titler, it's a monster, and a slow one. I like my titles to be available for modification separate from the object, not embedded in the object.

As for HitFilm, the ones that I have cannot be keyframed using X and Y as doing so causes one of them to go to inifinity. I have complained to Magix many times about this over several years and nothing has been done. As a result, I find them next to useless and avoid them.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

@CubeAce

I rarely have crashes now using VPX14.

I find no problem using a title editor with the video. If I don't want to use a "video", there are other ways to do it easily with Boris Title Studio. Loading all the presets though will eat up a ton of RAM. NBFX TP7 also is "slow" in the cache, but it too gets the job done. Also, it is more responsive in Vegas and Resolve than MEP2022 and VPX12, causing it to become unresponsive or crash. Not so with older versions of Vegas Pro.

As for LUT's, there are zillions of them out there. Some good, some not so good, at least for me. They might be good in quickly getting you into the ballpark for colorizing your video. But I find Red Giant's Magic Bullet Looks, and the BorisFX plugins do wonders and work quickly, or the old fashion way of using color grading tools.

I do have Spicemaster Pro 3 for Vegas which also works in Resolve, but doesn't show up in Magix.

We use what we are familiar with and what works. There is a lot of overlapping in plugins. Some just work better than others for specific tasks. But honestly, Magix OFX plugin needs work. And again, this is something that they really should consider, especially for VPX, their flagship professional editor.
