Gahh! What will convert to midi in Melodyne?

CosmicOutpost wrote on 11/29/2018, 3:16 PM

So I was over the moon to get Pro X three suite as I can't play piano. I tried an export from Music Maker with a tune and sure enough Melodyne converted a nice approximation.

Now I actually want to use Pro X3 for a project, the simple piano tune won't convert!!! I've tried:

  • Changing the sample rate from 48khz to 44.1khz
  • Changing the sample rate to 24bit to 16bit
  • Running the piano sample through Music Maker to make it identical to the basson attached.
  • Normalising the Piano just in case Melodyne needs loud sample to measure
  • Making the sample shorter incase it can only do 12 seconds of something!

So please, anyone! Can you tell me what gives with Melodyne? Why will it convert the basson attached but not the piano!!!

(If you like the piano its by the folks at Film Riot available in their trailer pack)

Hi again.

I see the Samplitude forum is now working again, so you might be best-advised to repost your question there.

However, I see you're asking about the functions in Melodyne, essentially. It appears you have successfully converted a monophonic Bassoon melody to MIDI but cannot do the same to a polyphonic piano piece. Is that correct?

If so, the answer lies in the different versions of Melodyne! There are four, Essential, Assistant, Editor  and Studio, in ascending functions (and price) order! All except Essential will convert monophonic audio to MIDI; only Editor and Studio include DNA (Direct Note Access),the ability to read, analyse and transform polyphonic passages. As a result I suspect from what you write that you have Melodyne Assistant, so what you're trying to do is not possible, sorry. This page gives a versions comparison (you will need to scroll down the page).

Hi,

FYI, I received an email with an offer to upgrade to Melodyne 4 Assistant for 49$ US. With Samplitude, we have Essential and I just noticed that there is an update to v4.

@emmrecs

Jeff, thanks for the description of the versions. Looks like Assistant for 49$ US is too good to pass up. I'll take the upgrade.

Thanks @emmrecs I only have what came with Samplitude Prox3 so that's just Essential!! I'm not that much of a musician so will have to stick to what I have! Thanks for the lateral thinking about mono or poly tunes :-)

@CosmicOutpost @browj2

Glad to be of assistance! The advent of DNA in the "higher" versions of Melodyne is certainly pretty revolutionary. I've used it in polyphonic mode to correct one note in a pretty dense chord: it was the final note of a performance, recorded straight to stereo so no multitrack to be able to isolate one instrument, and the bass guitarist hit a note one tone below where he should have been! Not wholly easy to "correct" on the recording but, I suspect, impossible without Melodyne and DNA, the ability to isolate the one note..

@browj2

I don't think you will regret at all moving up to Assistant; just be aware that further "upgrading" is a very real temptation! I now have Studio, having begun with what was then called Editor, but was really the equivalent of what is now called Assistant!
