filmed a funeral and want to share it with copyright material

spuddy13 wrote on 4/8/2024, 3:44 PM

i filmed a funeral

standard funeral with quite a bit of talking

a few hymns

but 4 music tracks are elvis and others

when i come to share the movie i can pass to family on memory stick

but if i want to stream remotely and drop video on youtube

i think youtube will strip the elvis tracks and others

how do i get round the copyrights and where could i stream for free online without restrictions

thats my first issue

my second issue is 3 points in my video i messed up

the first one as i moved the tripod to film minister it kind of went back and forth a bit

a second time i panned in instead of out

as i film on a single camera

how do others fix this so that i edit out the jerky suff but retain the audio continuity

do you jost slot in a bit of good film from few seconds before to replace the shakey stuff

any advice helpful if you understand the issue

other than the 20 seconds that i messed up its a fab first funeral

thanks

Brian

p.s. the undertaker said...Son if you do well here i could have a few more for you 🙂

Most definitely it will.

Strictly speaking you shouldn't. There are ways around it but if found out or reported, it could cost you getting banned and channel taken down. Even if the video is set to private viewing it will not prevent a copyright strike if published. Try uploading and see if it comes up with copyright strikes. Not all copyright strikes are harmful to your channel but may just result in demonetisation of that video which if your channel is not really there to make money is of little consequence. On the other hand it may mean removing the songs or video altogether.

I would not have thought you would like to share a funeral with the general public so I assume it would really be for the friends and perhaps the not so close family. In which case try creating a Google Drive account and upload a version of it there. From which you could allow them to download or view it for themselves. Depending on the final file size you could also try using a file transfer service.

my second issue is 3 points in my video i messed up

Try taking a couple of frames before things got jerky and export them as jpegs or bitmaps or png files and then use those as stills to cross fade from one to another with a slow zoom slightly in or out with a slight sideways motion. Even add some stills or video from other times or of the deceased if appropriate at that moment.

Or just leave it as is. I have never covered this topic personally or been asked to. Funerals are a funny topic for some people and feel it is a private time for reflection. I would not think expectations would be the same as for a wedding.

I know cultures vary as do beliefs and to date I have not seen one photo taken at a funeral let alone a video but that is not to say it is not done, just my personal experience of attending either family or friends' funerals. After gatherings can go either way depending on religious background or lack of it.

Ray.

Youtube

I've put up quite a few videos on YT with commercial soundtracks with no issue. You get a copyright "claim", the music details will appear in your description, and you will not be able to "monetise" you videos. That means any ad revenue will go to the artist/s, not you. Funerals probably wouldn't generate that much traffic anyway, methinks.

It is, of course, depending on how you look at it, in their interest to promote their music, so having it on one of your videos for free actually is doing them a favour.

If they will not permit your music, it will either be blanked or you'll get a strike against you. That is bad, as I think it's 3 strikes and your channel is closed down.

Therefore, my suggestion then would be to create a second YT account, upload the video and see what happens. If YT places a claim against you, great. If they give you a strike, you'll have to resort to plan B.

Another option to distribute your video is via Google Drive. Files there can be played back on the computer quite easily, without having to resort to Youtube and without any copyright issues. Here's an example (cuts off half way through):

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1F673PmDUdjwarr7k_SyKegC35ACtUhBm/view?usp=sharing

BTW, I got a copyright claim against that soundtrack but it's still up.

Splicing out the bad video

Re your wonky video, another option would be to go to the church and take some general footage that you could use to fill in the gaps: ceilings, walls, pews, a shot of the outside. Then you simply uncouple your video object from your audio object, chop out the bad video, put in the new video, then couple them up again.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Brian.

Regarding Google drive.

Videos put onto Google drive take longer to render than on YouTube.

You will be stuck with showing the video with a Maximum playback resolution of 1920 x 1080.

There is only 15GBs of free space on Google drive without a subscription. The amount of free space provided can be changed with little warning. Originally Google provided 20GBs of free storage.

Each video has to be set permissions to view and / or download and sometimes I have had to give additional clearance from my Google account before a video could be played by another person passing the link onto another person's machine.

I have only ever uploaded MP4 files and have no idea if other files types can be rendered to play back on google drive but assume That Google drive has the same requirements as YouTube. You can upload files of any resolution you like but the site's own player will not play the files back at more than 1920 x 1080. But with the correct permissions given can be fully downloaded at the uploaded resolution.

Google Drive has the same copyright rules as YouTube. Not surprising as Google owns YouTube.

"Respect copyright laws. Do not share copyrighted content without authorisation or provide links to sites where people can obtain unauthorised downloads of copyrighted content. It is our policy to respond to clear notices of alleged copyright infringement. Repeated infringement of intellectual property rights, including copyright, will result in account termination."

They reserve the right to periodically inspect the content of anyone's drive account and act upon any infringement they find.

A complete terms of service agreement can be found here.

I have never tested the copyright infringement rules to find out as all my uploads have only ever consisted of my own work or with the copyright owners permission.

Terms of service can be country specific with variations dependant on the users location.

Ray.

[Edit]

Thinking upon this further.

Every Funeral service provider must have a performing rights licence to allow them to play copyrighted music in a public space, That has become increasingly more complex over the years as more bodies have arisen to cover independent musicians as well as those covered by major music labels. That would not cover further and later distribution of of such materiel. The only legal way I can think of is to replace such music with a copyright free alternative or generic background sound track with a written caption of what music was actually played along with a copyright restriction notice such as 'original soundtrack replaced due to copyright infringement laws'. Either that or cut out those parts altogether.

If you have someone talking over parts of that music that needs to be retained there are now programs out there that can separate the voice from the music to be inserted in the soundtracks place but that is fiddly at best to sync to picture and much more work.

Hi Brian.

Have you tried putting the image on a higher numbered track and then just reducing the transparency for that image?

For the image I used an edited file and erased the background and saved as a png file for transparency of the images background. You can change the size and position of the image using the size / position / rotation effect.

Or do you want something different?

@spuddy13

Hi Brian.

I used a separate photo editing package to erase the background from the face and save as a png file with alpha layer.

Then reduced transparency on the track itself as shown above.

If you click on the face image you will see what an alpha layer does in a png file. It needs a bit of tidying up as the background is not entirely erased.

I've used Photoshop but a free program like GIMP could do it as well.

Erasing backgrounds is probably getting easier in newer programs but manually that took me about 20 mins. Then again I get a lot of practice.

If it wasn't me it would have been another member.

These things normally only take me a half hour or so to reply to with an example. I enjoy the challenge.

I can neither confirm or deny who is in the image but assuredly I have model release forms for everything I put on line and I am covered by the landowners / performers ticketing permissions from the events I take images of as an accredited photographer for the various organisations I work on behalf of. 😄

but they do in Wndows Explorer; I have to drag and drop into MS2024

Maybe I'm unique 😇😂

@me_again Hi, try looking in Platinum not Premium. Mine don't show in Premium either.

It's interesting that it shows all the other files within the VideoContent tree.

As Alice (in Wonderland) once said "Curiouser and Curiouser".

Hi

IIRC you both migrated from an earlier version and the old version is 'linked to' rather than migrated across.

My folder path is for a clean install of MMS and I put version in the filepath I gave.

@johnebaker

True, I did come from an earlier version but I don't understand how everything in the COMMON folder is linked to in the current MS2024 except that one folder?

It doesn't really matter, I'm just curious now.
