File Too Big For Movie Edit Pro 15? "Please make sure that the drive is not full or write-protected."

bensimon616 wrote on 9/3/2016, 6:19 PM

Hello,

I've been using Magix Movie Edit Pro 2015 for awhile now without any issues, but I recently got an iPhone that films in 4k resolution. 3840 by 2160 resolution .MOV to be exact. I successfully filmed several small videos in this format and imported them to Magix many times. But then I filmed a video in this format that ended up being about 9 gigs big, which I didn't think would be a problem. But when I try to import it to the project I get the message:

"The file format of

C:\USERS\Ben\Desktop\Video_203.mov

cannot be read!

Please make sure that the drive is not full or write-protected.

If you do not have authorization to write or read from this path, please contact the administrator."

The file is also on the desktop, so it's not about folder permissions.

I don't understand what the problem is or how to fix it. Especially since I can continue to import smaller videos in the exact same format and resolution from the exact same iPhone with no problem. Is it simply that the program can't handle a file as big as 9 gigs? And if so, why not? And why doesn't the error message tell me that it's a file size problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ben

Hi

Move the file off the Desktop into a folder inside the Documents folder - you should never store files on the Desktop.

How long is the video?

Check the following:

  • Free disk space

  • Quicktime is installed and at the last version supported by Windows - also see this article.

  • Proxy files are being used - see the Projects settings options - if not turn this on.

Did you copy the file direct from the iPhone to the PC or use iTunes?

Hi!

Thanks for your response. To answer your questions, it was in the Pictures folder, which the iPhone exported to by default, then I moved it to the desktop for easy access, which is usually how I import videos. I tried moving it to documents just now and it didn't work.

The video is 24 minutes long, but I've imported ones about two hours long before. (But they weren't in 4k resolution).

I have about 35 gigs of free space left, which isn't a lot but it's more than the 9 gigs of the video. Could this be the problem?

I do have the latest version of Quicktime installed. HOWEVER, when I try to play the video via Quicktime it doesn't work. It says it needs additional software to play. The video plays just fine on Windows Media Player and the Movies & TV app that came with my ASUS computer. So it's not a corrupted file. But maybe Quicktime's issue with the file is a clue to the problem? I could try importing it from my iphone again but I don't want to take all that time just to have the same problem.

I did import it directly from the iPhone and didn't use iTunes. Like I said before, I can import other 4K resolution files from the iPhone and they work perfectly fine in Movie Edit Pro, it's only the larger 24 minute video that doesn't work.

Finally, I couldn't find the proxy files setting in the Project settings options. :( I looked in all the settings but didn't see anything similar to that.

I hope this helps you get a little bit more information, and thanks for your help so far.

I downloaded HandBrake and converted the file to MP4 which seems to be working in the program, but it's about a third the size. I'm not sure if I lost any video quality in the process but it says the resolution is the same. So this might be a decent fix, at least for this particular file.

With QT not being able to play the video this would most likely be the cause of the issue, the low disk space will not help either, especially if you turn on or are using proxy files.

. . . . the proxy files setting in the Project settings options . . . .

The proxy setting is here

You must have the Basic version of MEP 2015, proxies are available in the Plus and Premium versions, and there is no file size limitation in this version.
