For a fade out you don't drag on the whole clip but only on the little five sided icon at the top right.. The [A|B] icon is also a link to fade and transition menus with other choices.

Remember to check for any orphan object further along the timeline. Do a 'Zoom to fill movie length' to see that your fadeout is indeed on the last object.
