Fade out - How to

Arthur-LW wrote on 6/3/2012, 6:11 PM

Ok, noob here, and I find the program mind boggling, but apparently very extensive.  My only editing experience is with Womble's MPEG Video Wizard.  With said program it was simple to add fades (both video and or audio) at the start and end.  With Magix I am at a total loss to find out how to do it.  I have a video that has a bit of an abrupt ending and I would like to fade out the audio over a second or two.  Any ideas anybody?

Hi

Click the last clip on the timeline then drag the handle, circled in the image below, to the left  for the desired amount of fade you want

Is that all there is to it?

I can get precise adjustment to the second with the mouse?

Is there no dialog box that presents itself?  Nothing appearing saying what changes I am making and whether I approve them?  With Video Wizard I just right clicked on the video in the Timeline and I could set the fades to different values for both the audio and the video, or just choose the default fade.  But then too, it just had two-channel analog audio to deal with...

Speaking of which, what happens if I want to fade both audio and video at the same rate (see above)?

Then too, I don't have just the one audio track showing.  I think there were three audio tracks (don't have the project open at the moment).  Is there a batch edit of the tracks, or do I do the mouse thing one by one?

Complicated bugger, to say the least.  I even printed out the entilre pdf and put it in a loose-leaf binder for easier desktop reference.  I have the feeling it's a good program, but I can already tell the learning curve is going to be a real bitch.

Arthur-LW,

Yes, that's all there is to it!

For to the second (or even to the frame) accurate work just zoom in to the appropriate section.

If the original video / audio pair are still grouped then the two handles move together.

For multiple tracks -- video effects can be copied (from a right click on object menu) and then inserted elsewhere, but I'd think for just a fade it would be far easier to drag say three handles than opening menus and picking as many times.

Learning curves can be steep -- but so are the best mountain climbs!

Regards,

Carl

Hi

As Carl say - 'that all there is to it'.

You can adjust many different paramters of any object on the timeline using the 'handles' that appear when you select an object.

Just to complete the picture ' if you really want to do it 'the dialog box way' then select an object and then press the Q key to open the Object trimmer shown below

The following are :

1.  The fade in trimmer

2.  The fade out trimmer

3.  The start trimmer - cuts frames from the beginning of the object

4.  The end trimmer - cuts frames from the en of the object

The numbers in each trimmer are the number of frames

The fade in/out and end trimmers affect both video and audio for a video object - if you want to adjust the trim of either the video or audio and leave the other as is, then you have to ungroup them using the icon circled in the image, then select the individual part.

Note if you have multiple grouping then you will have to click the Ungroup button several times.

I use the object trimmer the majority of the time when going through a sequence of objects as you can jump from clip to clip without having to keep selecting an object, zoom in and press the Q key.  The buttons are bottom left and right just below the two preview windows.

HTH

Hmmm, don't know what to tell you, but that screen does not appear when I press the Q key.  Mine's Movie Edit Pro MX, version 11.0.1.4, should that be relevant.

I did see where I could click on the audio portion and drag the orange thingy.  I got a diagonal two-sided arrow, so that threw me for a second, but when I tried it it did drag over and create a diagonal line from upper left to bottom right corner, and adjustable as needed.  The audio tracks moved in unison when I messed with the top one, and I just had to go back and do the video one by itself, which isn't all that bad, since sometimes they need different timings.

Thanks guys.

I'm sure I'll be back for more.

Hi

If the Q key does not open the Object trimmer then your keyboard mapping is different.

From the menu select File,Settings, Keyboard shortcuts.

Scroll down the list until you see Object trimmer and click it once, the keyboard shortcut wil appear lower right.

I am also using MX and you are missing several updates the latest is 11.0.5.0 and fixes some issues.

Wow.  Who'da thunked it?  All these features and yet doesn't have the sense to check online to see if there is an update.  Or maybe someone had the idea to include that feature in this latest build. <crosses fingers>
Anyway, thanks Johne.  You have been very nice and helpful.  Carl too.

Just for what it's worth, and this may not be germane to this particular part of the forum, but I add it here for general info for you guys, and if there are any things you can think of that I need to know, that would be appreciated as well...

As I understand the program, it cannot capture from a STB, which is what I'm using Magix for exclusively.  Not a problem per se, as I have a Hauppauge HD PVR 1212, which is doing that just fine.  This particular unit captures through its component video input and SPDIF audio.  There were conflicts with its software (ArcSoft), but I found that if I uninstalled it, then installed Magix and then reinstalled ArcSoft, things seemed to be all right.  Hope so anyway.

At this point, all I need to do is edit out commercials and normalize the audio... maybe add a fade or two at the beginning and/or end.

That reminds me.  A question.  I found if I normalize the audio with only one audio channel visible in the Timeline, that it only takes one pass at searching for maximum, but if I have all the audio tracks showing it needs to make several passes before it's satisfied.  Is the latter a better way?  And should I do this with the commercials still intact and the m2ts object in one piece (before cutting out commercials), or should I wait until I have everything pruned out?
