Export just a Cropped section of a Video Clip - is it possible?

Xenofex2 wrote on 11/9/2022, 5:30 AM

Not a normal request I realise but I am just wondering if it is possible.

I have several short movie clips (currently 3840 x 2160) that I would like to crop an area of the movie, and then export just this cropped area to use in another program project. From the attached image, it appears that I have no issue (I think) with the cropping part. It is how to go about the  exporting that is confusing me. What setting to choose?

Here, I have just cropped around the ‘blueberries’ and the cropped size happens to be 1482 width x 2128 in height.

Is what I am hoping to do possible? I have MEP 21.0.1.104

Hi George

Try the following:

In the export settings set the Resolution and Aspect Ratio settings using the options indicated in the image below.

This was for a crop to 2100 x 1600 - in the Aspect Ratio option type in your section size for the example you gave as 1482:2128 - MEP will do the maths and automatically centre the cropped image, which should be without black bars after export providing the crop is set to the centre of the preview screen - testing in MMS 2023 did.

An alternative if you want all the sections to be the same size is to set the project to the required size and aspect ratio and import the clips, use Size and position to set them to original size, then drag the image in the preview monitor to the area you require and export as above.

Note: the resolution sizes should be divisible by 4 for mp4 export, eg 2100 will work 2107 will not.

Easily done:

Note the dimensions of your crop (1482x2128 if my eyes aren't deceiving me).

On the export screen, in the Resolution boxes, tap the 3 dots and type in your crop size. If the resolution isn't to Magix liking (aka "legal" with respect video formatting), it will change one or the other by a couple of pixels (the new numbers it wants to use will be highlighted in blue).

In the "Ratio" box, tap the three dots and type in the ratio as follows: "182:2128" (or the numbers that Magix changed your Resolution to).

That's it. Make any other adjustments to the export then proceed.

Magix will have another hissy fit and throw up a warning about the export settings not matching the movie settings (they don't, obviously; your "movie settings" may be 1920x1080 but you're exporting 1482x2128) but just hit "Continue" and you'll end up with a video file of a 1428x2128 resolution/shape, as per your crop.

Humpf. John beat me to it!

John, technically the correct term is "movie". These details are not part of the "project settings". 😉 You can of course have multiple movies, each with different resolution, ratio and framerate, in the same project.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi George,

I have several short movie clips (currently 3840 x 2160) that I would like to crop an area of the movie, and then export just this cropped area to use in another program project.

The key is "to use in another program project," assumably a MEP project. MEP/MS/VPX have a very powerful feature - Movies - that can be exported and imported. George, I hope that you know how to use multiple Movies in a project. If not, I put a tutorial below in which I set up multiple movies.

In Project 1, simply make a separate Movie, say A, B, C, for each special object or part that you want to use in other Projects. Export the Movie A with a representative name, then B, then C, etc. The extension will be MVD. Save the project. An exported Movie is just a one movie project file.

Open Project 2. When you want the content from Movie A, Import it and it will go into a separate Movie. Copy the content from Movie A into the main movie of Project 2. When you don't need Movie A anymore in Project 2, remove it from the project (click on the X of the Movie). Repeat for the other Movies B and C.

Your Movies A, B and C are always available for use in other projects.

I have template Movies that I import into Projects when needed.

For anyone with VPX, instead of copy/paste from the other Movie, the Movie itself can be a nested object. Simply drag the Movie from the Project Temp Folder onto the timeline. Of course, the Movie must not be removed from the Project.

Hi Alwyn

. . . . These details are not part of the "project settings". 😉 You can of course have multiple movies, each with different resolution, ratio and framerate, in the same project.. . . .

I get what you mean, correctly speaking we should say: 'Movie tab in the Project/movie settings dialog', however, and this is where confusion can arise, in File, Settings there is no Project/movie settings option - it is Movie 🙃

I came upon this interesting 'dilemma' in the Project settings tab:

Add a couple of movies to the project put a different clip on each one, then go to the Project settings tab and select Use thumbnail from film. You can only select an image from the movie that is at the first position.

Thankyou all for the answers and information. Brilliant.

I have managed my first export and looked at the Tutorial which has reminded me that I should also check out others.

Many Thanks
