Export Custom Graphic Fade Presets from SoundForgePro14 to Pro16 Win10

Andrew-Pitcher wrote on 1/7/2023, 1:21 PM

How do I export Custom Graphic Fade Presets that I created in Sound Forge Pro 14 to Sound Forge Pro 16 in Windows 10? I work in IT Support and have a decent PC Technical background. I have searched, and searched Google, and through various Windows Explorer folders on my PC, and I am unable to find the File Location for the many Custom Graphic Fade Presets I have created in Sound Forge Pro 14. I have upgraded to Pro 16 over a month ago, and have not been using it because it will take a while to recreate all of the Custom Graphic Fade Presets that I use almost everyday.

My workflow primarily consists of using the many Custom Graphic Fade Presets that I had made.

Does anyone know the folder path/file location on where these Presets are Located in Windows 10? I would sincerely appreciate this information so that I can start using Sound Forge Pro 16, otherwise I would have to spend an hour or two recreating the many Custom Graphic Fade Presets.

Many thanks for any help on this!

Seasons greetings and welcome to the Magix Sound Forge users community @Andrew-Pitcher

Graphic Fade is not a VST or DX plug-in so presets are not easily saved or moved.
I have this registry location noted but do not recall much else. HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > DirectShow

Otherwise the only work-around I can think of is to create a volume envelope (V key) in the timeline which will create an Fx chain . Name and save the Fx chain and the Volume preset. Then 'Save as' a SF Pro project which will create a <.frg> file and folder, This 'project' will open in SFP-16 and display the volume envelope as it was in SFP-14 when the chain preset is recalled.
As you are probably are aware SFP-16 has problems with VST plug-ins which may or my not affect your particular workflow.

Hi rruad, many thanks for your reply, and I appreciate your efforts on trying help.

I checked the Reg key you had posted, unfortunately it was not useful, and the Fx chain solution seems a little cumbersome.

From my experience providing break/fix IT Technical Support for over 7 years on Hardware/Software that Software Programs typically store settings somewhere but it's just trying to figure out where these Graphic Fade Presets are Saved on PC's running Windows 10.

What I am going to try is to search and compare all file folders tied to my Sound Forge Pro 14 installation and all folders linked to my Sound Forge Pro 16 installation that does not have any of the Custom Presets created yet to see if there is a difference somewhere and to ultimately find where these Custom Presets are stored.

It will take some time to figure this out, but it will save time going forward especially as future upgrades are released and if I rebuild or build a new PC.

If I can figure this out. I will reply to this post with the file location.

Cheers!

@Andrew-Pitcher I'm pretty sure the presets are stored in the Registry, like @rraud mentioned, under HKEY_USERS\YourUserID\SOFTWARE\DirectShow\Presets\ and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\DirectShow\Presets\

This is how it was done for most DirectX Plugins.

You can't see anything there? You can also try to search for the preset name in the registry.

I created a Graphic Fade preset with a unique name,. a registry search turned up two entries. I did not try or know if an export > import will work. Both have the preset name and the first also states 'Graphic Fade'
There are similar entries with cryptic names in
C:\Users\--MY USER NAME--\AppData\Local\MAGIX\Sound Forge Pro\15.0\Presets

Reg entries:
Computer\HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1127706934-2234140011-1683470176-1001\SOFTWARE\MAGIX\Sound Forge Pro\15.0\Presets\{0000045A-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

Computer\HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1127706934-2234140011-1683470176-1001\SOFTWARE\MAGIX\Sound Forge Pro\15.0\Presets\(Untitled)\{0000045A-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

@rraude From the Reg Entries examples you put in the reply above gave me enough info to import all the presets I made in SF Pro 14 into SF Pro 16! :-)

This is what I did to make this happen with the info you provided after a little Googling and Brain Storming.

1.) Exported HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3896855517-2696333472-3765867364-1002\SOFTWARE\Magix\SOUND FORGE Pro\14.0\Presets\{0000045A-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} Registry File > Saved it > Closed the Registry

2. Right Clicked the saved .reg file > Edit > In Note Pad, Changed the Line from HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3896855517-2696333472-3765867364-1002\SOFTWARE\Magix\SOUND FORGE Pro\14.0\Presets\{0000045A-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} to [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3896855517-2696333472-3765867364-1002\SOFTWARE\Magix\SOUND FORGE Pro\16.1\Presets\{0000045A-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}] > Clicked Save

3. Double left clicked on the saved modified .reg file > Clicked Yes > Clicked OK

4. Opened SF Pro 16, and all of my presets were there!!!

@rraude Thank you much for the breadcrumbs to help me figure this out!!!

Cheers!

Thank-you @Andrew-Pitcher for elaborating.
