Export codecs asymmetric load across CPU & GPU

Jonathan-Weis wrote on 6/26/2023, 5:48 PM

Export codecs asymmetrical loads across CPU & GPU are vastly different depending on the codec chosen. sample file is 15 min 4k capture from go pro hero mini 11. For example the AV1 codec relies heavily on the onboard cpu processor maxing out its power & temps while the GPU card idles or runs about 20-30%. But if you choose the MPEG4 It will reverse and idle to 5-25% the cpu, and lean on the GPU card 70-80%. Finally a HEVC output of same material will result in the 80% cpu 25% GPU. I am using a Intel ARC 770 16mb card. on a new Asus ProArt z790, Intel 13900k cpu. 64mb ram. 2 Samsung 980 drives with 2 tb each. new build water cooled aio, windows 11, bios, drivers are latest releases. I guess my concern is not that each codec lloads the cpu & gpu differently. A.I selected in the bios of the board. Curious why that is ? Video pro x15 latest release.

Hi

. . . . Export codecs asymmetrical loads across CPU & GPU are vastly different depending on the codec chosen . . . .

This, and what you are seeing, is correct you cannot change this behaviour as it depends on the GPU(s), ie Intel (see note 1), NVidia gpu's (see note 2) and some AMD gpu's which have an incorporated video engine.

The hardware accelerated (HWA) video formats are:

  • h.264 / AVC
  • h.265 / HEVC
  • AV1

Other video formats are encoded using the CPU.

Additionally some effects are encoded CPU only.

Note:

  1. AV1 support on integrated GPUs varies depend on the model of iGPU
  2. With NVENC support and not all GPU's will HWA all 3 formats for decoding/encoding.

If you wish to get a refund then contact Magix at infoservice@magix.net.

With respect to your issues in the comment I have hidden - it was posted in a topic which is for feedback, not issues with usage.

'I moved all the media files over to a separate NVME drive and it still is acting sluggish. Restarted the system a bunch of times performance seems to be dropping off faster than I can tolerate. . . Trying to make proxy files progress bar is like watching my 10 year old laptop chug at a snails pace.

What is the video format and resolution that you are importing - please use MediaInfo to analyse a clip and post the results from the Text view in MediaInfo.

Are you using Resizable BAR  to utilise both the ARC 770 and the UHD 770 GPU's?

. . . . samsung 980 drives . . . .

How many and how are they configured.

. . . . moving the program window to another monitor can be a chore / spooky behavior. . . .

Under Window, Windows Arrangement you can save preset interface layouts - arrange the panes as you require then create a preset.

I did not know if it was a bug or a feature. Encoding some formats, seeing the cpu go to 90-100 degrees shocked me.. Intel pushed 2 big updates to the hardware last night (round 6) / video. Took 5 mins to apply... This alleviated a lot of the stuttering that was happening. But a hitch or pause every second stopped when I plugged all the monitors into the graphics card instead of having one run on the cpu and one on the GPU. I also selected graphics card in all settings menu in the software. There is a crossing of identity of the monitors. If I right click on the desktop, display, identify one monitor is 1 and the other is 2. If I identify under the Intel ARC software they switch. Not sure if this could cause an issue and or effect performance. I have notified Intel of this behavior. THe AV1 encodes look much better too but the files sizes have grown (with the same settings & same footage). At least no longer potato quality. Thank you.

This is a Windows setting - try changing the options shown below - select the display you want as main then click the option to make this the 'main display'.

I would not expect to see temps as high as that given the system is water cooled - the max allowed junction temperature for the CPU is 100°C - is the cooler radiator and pump mounted so that no air in the system will collect at the CPU or in the piping?

I will double check the monitor checked as primary, I believe I already did that. It is a brand new build w/ AIO. Early temps were much higher than 3 days later. The very first encode I did the CPU went into torch mode.. 100c. After that it seems to be resting at 80c. It just depends on the codec. I do not know if it is, learning, a break in cycle, or something else. Thermal paste cycling or what not. That being said The 13900k has a reputation for being HOT. Believe me I did lot of home work. Thoughts about doubling up an AIO system roll around my head. Any demands put on the A770 ARC card are fine, in fact one could probably demand another 30-50% out of the card from temps / & processing power and still not overload the card. The bios for the Asus pro art started at 803 on vides I saw in feb, My copy had 816 I purchased in the last 30 days. The current download is version 1203 if that gives you any idea how fast they are making updates. Plus there could be ops running in the background that need to work themselves out. That being said the x10 copy I loaded on the system before upgrading to x15 ran super sweet. Gotta love computers.

Jonathon, I'll second JonhEB's comments re temps. I have a 13700K with an NZXT two-fan AIO and have only ever got to around 80°. If your AIO comes with software, try monitoring the CPU temp in that and what the fans are doing. Also, I'm sure Asus has a good fan app you can use. If the CPU temp goes to 100, the fans should immediately go to max RPM, which you would hear.

I'd be checking the basics: are the AIO fans actually running, is the pump itself actually connected, is the 100° measurement actually correct, check the seating on the cooler head on the CPU.

If the system is setup OK, you shouldn't have to disable services; I have a stock Win 11 running with over 200 processes running with no issues temp-wise.

Re cards, in my limited experience with my 3060, it only climbs around 15° above the idle temp even when running at 100% (which Magix will make it do often).

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
