errors when pasting effects to video section and on some other effects

Hi,

I'm having some problems with Movie Edit 2022 (21.0.1.92). Hopefully someone can help me sort them out.

1. On the timeline at some point I have 4 clips that I sectioned, resized and positioned (looks like 4 images in 1).

I copied the video effects from another clip from the movie (brightness, contrast, gamma - not copied size, position etc.) and pasted it on these 4 sectioned clips. On the first it pastes, but for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th clip, when I paste it changes (only visually) the section size.

When I check the Sections from View/Animation for that specific clip, everything is as it should be, but the sections have visually changed, not keeping their crop anymore.

Closed the program, reopened the project a couple of times, didn't do anything else but copy video effect and past it to the 4 sectioned clips, 4 out of 5 times it didn't work. Not it does.😒

2. Also I had trouble with applying "cookie cutter". Selected the video, clicked on apply effect, the options loaded, but nothing applied to the video. Tried to change shape or play around with the options and nothing. Restarted the program and nothing. After a couple of days, opened the program and now cookie cutter works 😒

3. And I have 2 clips, no transitions, and the 2nd clip has a fade in, so it can seamlessly go from clip 1 to clip 2. When I hit play to see how it looks, on the fade area the image freezes and it continues to play ok after it has passed the fade in.

Or when I have the 4 sectioned clips at once, I get the same freeze, and the image recovers after 2 more seconds.

I even enabled everything in smooth playback (reduce resolution, frame rate, use proxy, deactivate effects) and it's the same. The image freezes.

So the tale is the same for evety new project. Something doesn't work, restarting the project several times. Sometimes the effect or function works after program restart, sometimes it doesn't and it works after a couple of days 😑

4. I consider I have a powerful machine and video card that can handle video processing, but when adding effects, transitions and what not, that's when the program doesn't handle it well. With or without the "smooth playback" the playback isn't smooth at all.

HP Z820 - 2 x 2.7Ghz Intel Xeon, 128 Gb RAM - ecc

Video card: NVIDIA Quadro K4200, 4 Gb, 256 bit

Running on Windows 10 Pro

Do I have some settings inside the program that need to be made?

-------------------------------------

Also in Program settings> device options> hardware acceleration I have: Import: Microsoft Warp device; Processing: NVIDIA Quadro K4200; Export: Microsoft Warp device.

And this is a screenshot of the video project.

-------------------------------------

Thank you in advance for any explanations.

Hi,

1. When you copied the effects, did you make sure to uncheck Section? I tried what you did and had no problems.

2. Cookie cutter - do you have the lightning bolt at the bottom right of the Preview Monitor turned on (blue) and if so, right click to see if Deactivate effects is turned on. If so, turn it off, otherwise you won't see any effects, including the cookie cutter.

As for freezing, MEP was stuttering for me and it should not with my new machine. I had Intel UHD 630 turned on for Import and Export, but my video card (NVIDIA GeForce RTX3060) for processing. When I switched Processing to Intel, playback was smooth. Did you try using MS Warp Device?

From the specs and the settings above indicate the the program cannot find a suitable GPU for hardware Acceleration are the only option CPU and Microsoft Warp?

The K4200 GPU does not appear on the Nvidia matrices for NVENC Encoding or Decoding which would indicate the GPU does not have the NVENC core necessary.

The computer is a Workstaition designed for high-end computing and visualization ie 3D graphics, CAD and scientific modelling and number crunching, and due to the apparent lack of NVENC, it is struggling with video playback of the timeline in realtime.

Try turning on the Create proxy files in the Project settings, this will create reduce resolution files copies of the video files for use in playback and editing, when you export the movie the original files will be used, however export times may be extended.

Hi John,

1. I copied the video effects from another clip that wasn't sectioned, and made sure not to copy size/position/rotation, only color adjustments. For some weird reason today I haven't had this problem anymore, on the same video project.

2. Yup, that fixed it, disableing the smooth playback. (don't know how I missed that 😅) Thank you!

Regarding the freezing, I tried switching Processing to MS Warp Device and:

- when "smooth playback" disabled the image stutters on transitions and freezes when comes across the 4 video sections playing at once and unfreezes after 5 seconds of play

- when "smooth playback" enabled (checked only reduce resolution + reduce frame rate + disable effects) the image freezes when comes across the 4 video sections playing at once and unfreezes after 4 seconds of play, the rest is ok.

- when "smooth playback" enabled (checked only reduce resolution + disable effects) the image freezes when comes across the 4 video sections playing at once and unfreezes after 1 second of play, but it stutters and freezes more throughout the entire video project

Yes the only options are CPU, Microsoft Warp and video card.

Thank you! Learned something new today about video cards (they need to have video encode/decode GPU too for a video editing software to have a decent realtime playback).

If you are familiar with Nvidia cards, can you recommend something I can look at to solve this?

I can insert a secondary video card and assign it to Movie Edit.

Try turning on the Create proxy files in the Project settings, this will create reduce resolution files copies of the video files for use in playback and editing, when you export the movie the original files will be used, however export times may be extended.

Tried that just now, but it didn't made a difference for the playback.

-------------------------

I also tried copying those 4 sectioned clips in a new project. Same playback freeze problem.

And tried mixing down those 4 sectioned clips, inserted the mix into the original project file ("smooth playback" enabled > reduce resolution + reduce frame rate + disable effects) and the playback is seamless.

No more freeze or hang or stuttering on transitions on the other video clips that weren't mixed down.

The RTX series are currently 'the GPU to use'.

The RTX 2060 in both my laptop and PC, and perform smoothly for most of what I throw at them, 4K UHD 3840 x 1920, without the preview monitor lightning icon (lower resolution and framerate options) being on.

Though if I throw 4 x 4K UHD clips in a collage with some effects it can become a little jerky - this is when I would turn on the preview monitor options, ie lightning symbol blue.
