Error code 6

Patrick3603 wrote on 7/11/2024, 4:31 AM

Hi, I have Photo & Graphic Designer 2013 (Version 8.1.4) which has served me very well over the years. Yesterday it stopped working after a Win 11 update, with Error Code 6. I can't find an option to roll back the Windows update and no longer have a CD drive to enable reinstallation of the software from the original disc. Any suggestions please? (I did buy a later version of the program about 2 years ago, but prefer the functionality of the original one).

@Patrick3603 Can you run it as administrator by right clicking on the program icon? Does it help to set the compatibility mode to Windows 7 or 8 in the program properties?

You might be able to get the installer from customer support at infoservice@magix.net.

Thank you for responding. I have just rolled back the Windows updates, restarted the laptop and tried running the program as an administrator but the result is the same. I'll have to get an external CD drive and reinstall I guess.

Hi

Try running a full Windows system check before uninstalling, see this tutorial and follow steps 4 - 11.

If PGD 2013 was originally installed on Windows 8 or 10 and then upgraded to Windows 11, you may find that you are unable to re-install PGD 2013 on Windows 11. On my PC the C++ redistributables required for anothere xara program of the same age are no longer installable, and installation fails.

@johnebaker Thank you for this. I've now got an external CD ROM drive and will try repairing the program using the original disc. I did also open a ticket yesterday with Customer Support at Magix, I haven't yet had a response. I'll update if I am successful.

Before doing that I'll apply your tutorial, many thanks.

Success! I effected a repair using the external CD ROM drive, it's now working. Thank you both for assisting.

@Patrick3603

Hi

Thanks for the feedback, did the system check find any errors and fix them?

@johnebaker I didn't get as far as doing the system check, I went to the installed apps and clicked uninstall/change, then had the option to do Repair. I selected Repair (the CD was already loaded in the external drive), and it just carried on. It eventually put up notification that the repair was successful.

Incidentally, I received a response from Magix today as follows:

Thank you for your message.

Unfortunately, due to the age of the software and its incompatibility with the Windows 11 operating system, we can no longer provide technical support for the software.

As the manufacturer Xara has taken over the distribution of your software itself, you must contact the manufacturer directly for the latest version of the programme.

@johnebaker As a postscript to my previous comment, I use an HP Pavilion with Intel Core i7, about 2 years old. I decided yesterday evening to run sfc /scannow on it as you advised. It found and repaired corrupted files and has made a significant improvement on the speed. So major thanks for pointing me towards this.
