Encoding Locks Up

john-x wrote on 4/27/2025, 7:40 AM

I dunno what's going on but since last night & this morning, I can't get an encoding to MP4 done (added another video track). It just locks up w/(x) minutes left, usually 10 or less. I've tried deleting temp files and logged on using another Windows acct in case the profile is corrupt. It's 2023 MS Suite.

@john-x

I assume you are using the first of the two computers shown in your signature. What CPU does it have?

If the lock-up keeps occurring at the same or a very similar point in the export, this would suggest there is a problem with something (video, or audio, or transition, or effect) at that point on the timeline. If you try removing everything at that point (and then closing the gap) does the export proceed "normally"? If so, you need to very carefully examine what you have removed and try replacing it, bit by bit, trying the export again until it fails again. You will then have a very strong indication of what is causing the problem. You can then decide whether the particular section is vital to your export!

OTOH, you say you (added another video track). Can you explain a little more about this, please? Is it this addition which is causing the failure? Is its format substantially different to other video tracks in your project? (The free MediaInfo utility will give you this data. There is a tutorial here if you are unsure about how to do this. Please give us the data from this additional video AND one that was already on the timeline.)

Also, mp4 is a "container" format; it can include a variety of audio and video codecs so please show us a screenshot of your Export screen.

Fundamentally, the more information you can give us the more likely we are to be able to help you.

it's a i7-11800H 11th gen, 2.3ghz. I've also tried letting it encode on the primary monitor (there's 3) as MS has had issues in the past if it's on the 2nd LCD (my largest, widest LCD) and the PC goes into screen lock, MS crashes.

update: tried it on son's PC, he's got MS2025 Suite. the encoding also locked up... so there's something about the project that MS doesn't like.....

I agree, so try the steps I suggested earlier, i.e., remove everything which is on the timeline at the approximate time-point where the export fails. And also give us the MediaInfo data about one file that "works" and one that "doesn't"!

What setting do you have in Program Settings (shortcut Y)>Device options for Import, Processing and Export? Have you tried changing the options there ?

the extra video I inserted is a guitar metronome, in which only a section of the video was used (majority of it is outside the viewable screen).

Anyhow, it's resolved. I went back 2 revisions and did the same updates and it worked this time. I dunno what went wrong but I always save & rename when making major changes. in this case, it saved me, LOL.

but to answer this, the guitar metronome extends the majority of the video, from 1st 3 seconds to last 5 seconds.
