Encoding fails with errNo 5

BobPulliam wrote on 10/5/2021, 3:01 PM

Using MEP Premium - just installed today. Last line of log file says: DBK BurnProject: 10 - movie encoding failed. Working on Windows 10 machine with an EVGA GeForce GTX 1060. My MB is a GigaByte GA-H97-D3H. Windows 10 is fully updated (in fact just freshly installed).

Video is only about 4 minutes long with a minimum of material, although that shouldn't be it, because the failure occurs immediately after hitting the burn button.

Additionally, a little two pic timeline was tried with file encoding only (no burn). It started to encode, but failed with errNo 13 - menu rendering failed. The menu was created by MEP as a single entry (the choice given before doing the burn).

@BobPulliam

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Error code -5 on export/burning usually means:

  1. there is an issue with the object on the timeline located at about the time the error occurs.
  2. the graphics card drivers may not up to date
  3. the graphics card settings in the program may be incorrect for the hardware installed in the PC.

Error code -13 means there is an error in the disc menu, this can occur if the disc menu has been modified.

We need more information:

What is your computer specification - see this topic for details of what is required and please quote the processor and graphics card/chipset make/model in full?

Which version of Movie Edit Pro are you using as found under Help, About?

What is the video format of the source videos, a MediaInfo analysis of one of the videos on the timeline would help, see this tutorial on how to set up a analyse the video clip, and what device were they recorded on?

Are any effects applied to the video clips

What changes did you make to the DVD menu?

Thank you, John. Here's what I have:

RAM - 24.0 GB (23.9 GB usable)

Hard Drives:

Everything above has not changed since numerous successful encodings.
I only changed programs because MEP mysteriously began to fail on encoding due to
an audio issue (someone on the web suggested it was a direct X issue).
MEP stated I had to download an update from within MEP (which always failed
to download).  Upgrading Direct X didn't solve the issue.
Because I couldn't solve issue otherwise, I decided to upgrade to
latest version of MEP and had to install Windows 10 to do so.  The errors are
different, but it is all the same hardware (from success to failure).

I created a brand new test movie for this entry.  It has two jpg's and one mpg4,
with an mp3 background music.  The one video was recorded on a Canon Rebel T6i and
is only 5 seconds long.  jpgs came from same camera.  Those successfully encoded
in earlier dvd's.  No effects were used.  I did nothing with DVD menu creation,
other than select "automatically create chapter marker at beginning" when the
burner section started up.  I chose AVCHD for the quality.  I did nothing in
the burn dialog other than press the burn button.

Error dialog states Menu Encoding Failed.  I've included the log file.  In this
case, the error was 13. I have the .txt files for the error log, and MediaInfo, but the upload wouldn't let me present that file type.

I will try to duplicate error 5 to report on its circumstances.

Hi Bob.

Have you checked your audio settings in Windows?

Sometimes Windows updates alters the settings. If frequently occurs on my system. The best settings are 24 bit 48kHz on all inputs and outputs.

Also current Windows build is 19043.1237.

Are you using an nvidia game driver of Studio driver?

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to keep an eye on that. It was set to 16 bit, 48,000. I set it to 24 bit, but the encoding still failed. Not using a game or studio driver.

I went back through log file and noticed that there were a lot of errors in getting the correct frame rate. I suppose that would indicate that the final error is video in nature.

Here's a pip. I shut down MEP after that encode attempt. After I entered the above post, I went back to open and it warned me that MEP was already started. I went to task manager and it isn't listed in currently running programs. Tried to start again, and MEP is somewhere back there in the hidden recesses of Windows 10. Guess I'll restart. 😒

Thank you, Ray.

Hi

You cannot upload text files as such, copy the contents and paste them into a comment, for the burn error only copy the section where the Burn starts up to a few lines after the error message.

. . . . I did nothing with DVD menu creation, other than select "automatically create chapter marker at beginning" when the burner section started up.  I chose AVCHD for the quality. . . . .

Are you wanting to burn a DVD or Blu-Ray disc?

If DVD use the DVD option, if Blu-Ray use the Blue Ray option.

Correction: AVCHD is an alternative Blu-Ray option and is a compromise between a standard DVD and a Blu-ray Disc, in that it burns high-def media formatted as Blu-ray using a standard-def burner on regular DVD disc. You can also do this with standard Blu-Ray - the maximum play time is about 25 - 30 mins.

The issue with the menu may be that you are selecting a DVD menu template instead of one of the HD templates for the Blu-Ray disc.

The most robust menu I have found is the Red Smoke template, try burning using this template and use the Image recorder option to avoid wasting discs, it will create a disc image on your hard drive.

I use AVCHD because it is recommended for HD TVs. I assumed it was better.

I used the Red Smoke template and it encodes under DVD and AVCHD. I just ran it again and burned a DVD under AVCHD. Success. I guess MEP doesn't like its own single entry menu that it inserts. I'll stop selecting that. with my short projects.

About to put it in a player and check it. Then I'll do a longer project to see how it holds up. I'll let you know how it all works out.

Thank you, very, very much.

The disk I burned was fine. Used the Red Smoke as you recommended. That's a fiiiine piece of work. But something's still screwy.

I put in the file I've been working on (originally created in MEP 2021 - hope that's not the problem), and tried to encode it. Failed. So I stripped out all jpgs and video files and turned off hardware encoding. All that was left was an mp3 track, and text objects. I tried again and it failed the same way. @BobPulliam

Hi

From the burn log it looks like the multiplexing error is due to the lack of a video stream, IIRC this is a mandatory requirement for AVCHD/Blu-ray discs.

. . . . Can a file really be too small to burn? . . . .

No, it is possible to burn a 1 second movie to disc.

. . . . Just encoded with the videos and jpgs, and still got the "not enough data to multiplex."  . . . .

Are there any chapters in the project - if so how far apart are they?

If there are no chapters, or they are at least 10 seconds, apart then I would suggest you raise a support ticket for this one, it is an error message I have never seen. - see this Support article on how to raise a support ticket.

The entire video is about 4 minutes. Around 3:20 of that contains video, and it still gives that error. There is only one marker at the very beginning, which the menu module placed for use by the menu. Don't remember if that is a chapter marker, though.

I'm on the verge of pulling an old drive out and making a clean install of Windows 10 and MEP. Windows hung up this afternoon and spent hours telling me not to turn off my computer, it was getting my computer ready for me. I left it running and came home. I hope it meant it's making a pile of gold to put on my desk in the night.

Hi Bob.

Sometimes I have noticed that if there is a Windows update waiting to be loaded that it affects MEP and VPX. I think it may sit in system memory or something. Certainly MEP doesn't behave well until I finish the Windows update.

Normally for me this presents itself as a complete slowdown of the program but I haven't tried exporting anything while there are Windows updates to be dealt with.

Hi Bob

. . . . Windows hung up this afternoon and spent hours telling me not to turn off my computer . . . .

You could be on to something here - on my old laptop i5-46xx processor Windows 10 updates would cause an issue with either the mouse or audio and affect MEP and some other programs. I stopped updating it at Windows 1908 and replaced it earlier this year, due to 4K editing restrictions, before the latest Windows 10 round of updates - 20H1 and 2 - which may have compatibility issues with older hardware.

Came to office this AM and it had finished, but not reward on desk.

First thing I did was make a new dummy project. All of this has been over getting a project created in MEP2021 to work. New project had same kind of elements (video, text with movement, and a jpg), but all new. It burned avchd without a hiccup. Went back and tried old problem project, hoping it was the night-time fiasco. Same error on encoding.

I guess I'll try to recreate that MEP2021 project and see if it will work. I've run into a time crunch, so it will be a week before I can start the recreation process, but I'll let you know.

Thank you both for your help.

BobPulliam wrote on 10/20/2021, 3:02 PM

I'm back from vaca, and have been working on isolating the problem. Still have ErrNo5 going on. Was able to burn a disk Sunday, but can't figure out what was different, other than the fact that I filled in blank parts of video so I didn't have to hit "ignore" on the burn dialog. That only worked once, and has gone back to errors. Exported an Mpeg4 video this afternoon without difficulty (HD quality). At least I can put it on YouTube. It makes no sense, and I think I'll have to break down and replace my hardware. Seems like such a waste. Thanks for all your help.

I have it licked. My new hardware hasn't arrived yet, but I went ahead and did a clean install of Windows 10 (had only installed over 7Pro before), then a reinstall of MEP. Big difference (just in Windows). Have encoded to disk once, and burned two DVDs without ErrNo5. My only problem is the DVD menu will only play from beginning of movie, but won't catch the chapter marker I've set in the middle. That's a new challenge. Thanks again for all the input.

If you have a chapter marker(s) anywhere in the video as well as the compulsory one at the start of the video, then MEP will create a separate chapter menu - this assumes you have not told the program not to create one, depending on the menu template used it may appear as a button/icon/link on the main menu - see images below

It actually works in the MEP preview, but not in the blue ray player I've always tested MEP burns on. The menu edit screen looks like this:

The errant button is the one on the right. It actually plays the audio from that chapter when I select it, but stays on the menu screen for video. As I said earlier, if I play from the introduction button, it will play just fine all the way through.

Hi

Looking at the image it appears you have either:

  1. moved the chapter menu button to the main menu and removed the default chapter menu button indicated in the image below

    or

  2. removed the default chapter menu icon, and created a new button and linked this to the chapter marker

Either case may have introduced the error which prevents the video from playing from the chapter marker.

From past experience I found it is not wise to put main video and chapter menu items on the same menu page.

I just changed the menu to "Purple Wave" without making any changes to what the program automatically did, and it still reacts the same. I didn't initially move anything that I remember. I just remember double clicking the menu template, and then unchecking the box that forced the user to navigate down a level to get to the chapters. Maybe that's it?

Additional finding. If I start video at beginning (and it's running normally), hitting the jump to next chapter on the dvd remote has the same effect as selecting the second menu item (audio with video frozen where you tried to jump). I'll look for your two possibilities as I work with the menu.

Found something weird. When I double click the first button, the menu image selector on the right only allows me to access images in that first portion of the movie. When I double click the second button, I can only select the second portion after the chapter marker (that will not play video). However, there is only one movie on the timeline (image below), so that's confusing.

Hi

. . . . unchecking the box that forced the user to navigate down a level to get to the chapters. Maybe that's it? . . . .

Quite likely - which option did you turn off:-

  1. the disc navigation

    OR

  2. the Chapter menu

    OR

  3. both of the above

in either case there will be no chapters or chapter menu available and the menu should only have the single movie button on it, not the 2 shown in the previous menu image you posted.

If you want both the main video and the Chapter section on the same menu there is a work around for video up to where the total run time of main video + chapter(s) does not exceed 2 hrs by creating a multi movie disc as described below and MEP will create the menu correctly for you with no need for any chapters to be added:

  1. Select all the objects on the timeline that are in the Chapter section and copy them

  2. Add a second timeline - click the + indicated in the image below - and paste the copied objects into it

  3. repeat steps 1 and 2 for further chapters if necessary

When you go to the disc editing/creation page you will get something like this example which has 2 timelines in the project

That work around did it. Magix needs to fix that, though. Shouldn't have to double size to get chapters on one page. Did it with no trouble in MEP 2020, and the fast forward worked on dvd playback too, but that isn't your problem.

Thank you for all your help. Love your avatar, btw.

If you want to see the video that caused all this trouble, I was able to do the MP4 export and put it on YouTube several days ago. The link is

Thanks again.

btw - it was #2 (chapter menu check box) that I changed
