Editing/Splitting takes

I have come across a baffling aspect of Music Maker 2014 Premium that I can find answered in the instructional video or user's manual.  I am trying to split or cut takes into sections so I can adjust the volume and sound.  However, whenever I try either method (cut object or split object), everything after the split/cut gets replaced by the piece before the cut.  It's a little awkward to describe, but think of it this way: if the take is 1 minute long and I'm cutting it at the 30-second mark, instead of being left with Seconds 1-30 and Seconds 31-60, I'm left with Seconds 1-30 and Seconds 1-30.  Am I doing something wrong or is there a setting I need to adjust?

What you are doing seems correct but the problem you are facing is strange. I like split feature but my version is older. As per Music Maker 16 Premium help. Please try if it helps.

"Any object can be split up. Every one of these object parts becomes
an independent object in itself. To cut an object, select the object,
move the start marker to the edit point, and select the "Split object"
command from the "Edit" menu or press the "T" key or Alt + 6. It’s even easier
with the Split object mouse mode."

Yes I did, and the problem still exists.  I have been through the manual and help section over and over and I honestly have no idea why this program is behaving this way.  Whether it's my brain or the program that's defective, I'm about ready to return it.
