DVD Size Default Is DVD-5... How to change to DVD-9?

Howdy.  :-)

Running Movie Edit Pro MX Plus, Version 11.0.5.0.

If I have a compilation that will not fit onto a SL DVD the software wants to adjust the bitrate accordingly.  It just assumes without any input from me that I only use single-layer DVDs.  I tell it to ignore but it doesn't and ends up adjusting the compilation to around 7 gigs.  This is an unnecessary reduction in quality since the disc is supposed to handle at least another gig of data.

If it would just obey the selection I make (Ignore) and the compilation will not fit onto a DVD-DL I can run it through DVD Shrink, which will only reduce it by the bare minimum to get it to fit onto a DVD-9.

Is it possible to set the default DVD size to that of a DL, and how do I get the software to comply with my decision to ignore the supposed discrepancy between the capacity of a DL and the size of the compilation?

Hi

Put a DL disc into the DVD burner - MEP will recognise it is DL and then try burning using the Image Recorder and tell it to ignore after which you can shrink the files if necessary .

However I think that you will not notice the slight reduction in quality if you just burn at 7 Gb compared to shrinking with DVD shrink which seems a long way round and unecessary task to achieve fitting the movie on DL disk

Thanks, John.  I don't mind using DVD Shrink, as it can run through a 9 gig movie and compress it to fit on a DL in under 60 seconds.  It's very good at what it does.  And before I have had a DVD I created with Image Recorder that DVDShrink said it needed to be compressed to 98%, but these days Magix isn't putting out these oversized compilations.  I tried a repair install and will come back later and report if that did it.

That showing the software a DL disc in the drive did seem to help though.  It said that the movie was 8400MB/8152MB.  If I clicked on Adjust bit rate it showed 8151/8152.  This left a little bit of white at the end of the Used space indicator, but even then the software threw up a dialog box saying the project wouldn't fit, even when it did the shrinking itself, and instead gave me a choice of

OK          Ignore          Cancel.

What a dilemma!

And, even with these numbers generated by the software, it still generated a disc it burned itself that Windows said had 7.08GB or 7,606,077,440 bytes, which brings me to another unrelated question:

According to DVD Studio Pro a DVD-9 has a capacity of 8.54 GB or 68.32 Gbit.

http://documentation.apple.com/en/dvdstudiopro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=C%26section=1%26tasks=true

So, according to Magix, it underutilized the disc in GBs but overfilled it in Gbits (?).  Can you (or anybody who wishes to jump in here) explain the discrepancy?

However all the above may be moot anyway.  I was just trying to utilize as much of the disc as possible.  Putting a ruler on the business side of the actual disc shows only about 3 mm of unused space left, so I guess even with all the numbers bandied about, the software seemed to push the envelope pretty good....  LOL

Hi

. . . . a capacity of 8.54 GB or 68.32 Gbit. . . . Can you (or anybody who wishes to jump in here) explain the discrepancy? . . .

Certainly - it is a bit of simple maths - but first the definitions of GB and Gb:  by convention  GB = gigabytes and  Gb = gigabits

1 byte is composed of 8 bits so 8.54 GB = 8.54 * 8 Gbits =  68.32 Gbits

. . . . Is it possible to set the default DVD size to that of a DL, and how do I get the software to comply with my decision to ignore the supposed discrepancy between the capacity of a DL and the size of the compilation? . . . .

I have not found anywhere to do this.
