DVD durations?

terrypin wrote on 1/19/2015, 3:11 AM

I don't know how many times I've used this window without querying these figures. Are they roughly correct? I thought a Blu-ray disc would deliver a shorter video than DVD SD?

No, the figures should be correct. HD footage needs much more space of course, but a BD has more space than a DVD.

Thanks Markus. I guess I was thinking of HD for Blu-Ray. So what is the assumption about the files for all three types please?

Hi

@ Terry

The 'traditional' guidelines based on the disc standards and specific compression ratios are-

  • DVD5 discs (single layer) specification states up to 120 mins of video

  • BD (25GB disc) up to 240 mins (720p?) or 120 mins (1080i/p?)

  • AVCHD  - 30 mins recording on a DVD5 disc.

  • AVCHD recorded on BD disc - similar to BD disc

All the above figures are guidelines only due to the ability to change the compression ratio of the video and do not take into account space needed for menus etc.

Wow, I am lost on this.

If a movie is an 90 min. long how can it be less than that when burned to a disc? I can't imagine watching and 90 min.long movie shortened to just 30 minutes.

Why would anyone want to do this?

browj2 wrote on 11/26/2015, 4:49 PM

It isn't. The play time shown is approximately the max that can be put on a DVD, BD or using AVCHD format on a DVD. It is not the playtime of your movie - you see the playtime of your movie in the timeline. If you have more than 1 movie, you add them up.

You select the format that you want, making sure that you do not exceed the limits.

As for the Help manual, I find it very good, but only if you read it. There is a pdf manual that comes with the program.
