Does any one have any tips to make Movie Editor Pro 18 run faster?

I'm running with an i7 processor 6gb of ram on windows 7 64bit with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M graphics card and this program is so slow. It is a brilliant program but it takes me twice as long to edit than in Sony Vegas, it keeps pausing for no reason. I've turned off auto save and set the display to low resolution.

The best ways to make MEP work fast is to close other applications and breaking the film into parts if you are using too much effects and transitions.

Hello,

I completely agree with Anirban's suggestions as they are the first ones that come to mind to me.  I have the Sony product you mention as well as many others, and I don't find MEP to run much different in speed to most, except that it is much faster and more stable than many of the Adobe products that I also have.

You have not been very specific about what you mean by it takes twice as long to edit.  What takes twice as long? Is it importing clips, adding effects or transitions, exporting video files, burning video files, playback rendering, etc. I just can't figure out what you mean.

I don't see any issues with your computer specs as long as you are not working with very large projects with multiple effects.  Do you regularly defragment your hard disc, do you regurlarly clean and defrag your registry do you have all the files you are using on your PC or Laptop hard drive or are they on a offline or remote USB drive?

I can definitely help zero in on how to make the application run faster if there were a little more information.

Thanks Guys, I'm using Canon MXF files (this maybe the problem) I'm creating a 40 minute DVD, the cursor constantly hangs for at least a minute if I try and move to a new section of the video or play a section. I've been using Song Vegus for many years and never had a problems of speed. I'm  taking Anirban Ray advice and breaking it down into chapters. Guess I need to save each section as a mpeg file then import then into another project. I don't really understand the rendering, this is not in Sony Products. Any tips on doing this would be appreciated.

Hi,

Your Canon MXF files may indeed be the problem.  Have you thought about trying to convert those files to something a little more standard like .avi, .mpg .wmv? and edit them from there?  Would you please try it on maybe a small video and let me/us know if things improve?

Thank you

Hi George,

The first this i did was to convert the files to mpeg and load them into Sony Vegas but quality was not good. I used www.brorsoft.com who claim to have a set up for Sony Vegas but I still didn't get the quality I'm getting in MEP so I'm going to try work with each chapter and see if I can do it that way. MEP has some great features and and I want to try and make it work.

Hi,

Just another comment for you, I have bought almost every video editor on the market in the under $500 range, and one or two in the over $1000 range, and this one is probably the best I have used.  Most stable, accurate and easy to use of anything else I have.  I have my own video business and do not work for any software company, so my opinion is of course just my opinion but I cannot see myself buying another product in the forseeable future.  I will do a trial on anything new and innovative that comes along, but will not buy again until I see something that is far superior to what I have with Movie Edit Pro.

Hi

To add to Georges comments (which I agree with) there are many other things which can slow your computer down in particular other programs running in the background.

There are two very well known anti-virus programs which can (IMHO) cripple even an i7 computer and make them slow if they scan on demand ie they scan every file loaded every time is it is accessed.  To test this you will need to disable the anti-virus and make sure your Internet connection is disabled.

Other programs loaded even they do not appear to be taking processor time, do lower the amount of memory available to MEP.   Try running yur PC with the absolute minimum of programs loaded

I agree with your comment that Vegas is faster thean MEP for previewing, IIRC Vegas actually pre-processes the video to a lower resolution for editting and only outputs HD at the rendering stage - yes this does happen in all video editors - it is the process of creating the video with all the transitions/effects etc.

Does the software which came with the camera offer file conversion?

Thanks John,

I rented the camera, but I did download the canon software which allows you to copy the files from the camera to the PC. Now I've cut the project down to chapters it's working fine, just need to workout how to get these sperate projects on to a DVD.

Hi Colin

When you complete each chapter, export the movie as a Magix mxv file.

Create a new project and import each mxv file in the correct order on to the timeline put in the final transitions if need between chapters.

Export/burn the movie.

This way you have the individual chapter projects so you can go back and tweak the if necessary, re-export and import.

Hope that makes sense!!

Thanks to everyone who helped with this, i've finally finished the project. This is great product with a great forum. I'm now going to see if there is a wishlist for this product.
