Do external controllers MIDI, drumpads, synthesizers work with Magix?

jnevels89 wrote on 12/23/2013, 11:56 AM

I'm finding it difficult to make some tweaks or create music using my track pad and keyboard on my laptop. I was wondering if any of Novation"s launchpads such as the Launchpad S or they Launchkey Mini. I also saw the Ableton Push as well. Im trying to see if devices like that willl work with MAGIX software. Im trying to make beats using the pads so I wanted to make sure something like this existed. I dont want to have to buy FL Studio or Ableton. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I'm afraid so.

Thanks but that doesnt really help. Are you saying this is not possible or?

jnevels89 wrote on 12/23/2013, 1:27 PM

This is not possible.

Happy Holidays from Story Choice 102.

Ok thank you, so Im guessing you can only use an actual MIDI keyboard as an external input. But if I wanted to control them externally I couldnt because the sound pools cant be manipulated besides a mouse or track pad?

Hi

The Ableton Push and Launchpad S require (AFAIK) dedicated software.

The Launchpad Mini may work as it is also a USB midi controller/keyboard and works with other software, as listed by the manufacturer although you may find you cannot use all the functions of the Mini..

Have you asked the same question in the Novations forum?

. . . . you can only use an actual MIDI keyboard . . . .

Yes and no - Midi devices such as Akai, Yamaha and Roland keyboards will work OK, drum pads and devices like the Novation may work if they can send, or be programmed to send, standard Midi signals eg GM, GS or GM2.

So the sole purpose for MAGIX is to play around with pre-composed loops but if you want more freedom use other DAW's? Im not even sure MAGIX is a DAW. Is it not as mainstram as Ableton or FL Sudio? BTW I think Im going to go with the Launchkey Mini. Thanks for your insight btw.

After starting the system, press and hold the SETUP button on the Launchpad Pro and press the top left PAD then release SETUP. The word LIVE should scroll across the Launchpad Pro. In Music Maker go to File/Settings/Program Settings. click the Audio/MIDI Tab and select Launchpad Pro as the MIDI Input Device. Press <OK> button.

Setup a track using drums. tap around on the Launchpad to find the pads associated with each drum sound. (These aren't shown, on the screen, like in Ableton Live, however I tap each one to see which sound shows up in the MIDI editor.) Enjoy !

JNevels, I hear you and think I agree that MMM may not be as flexible as other DAWS but, when I was looking around a few years ago for a DAW, this seemed to meet my needs. But the other programs were very similar in their use of loops and sound management. I can do alot with my mini keyboard (Akai), including score as many individual tracks as I think I can handle by playing the keyboard myself. But yes, I think the real power of MMM comes from the Soundpools, so you have to be comfortable with that. But, in the end, I keep longing for my first DAW from many years ago; Bars 'n Pipes for the Amiga platform. IMHO, it was a fabulous program for musicians and for music composition. My .02, anyway.

Hi guys,

You do realize that this thread is 3 years old and the OP hasn't logged in for a long time.

That said, MusicMaker cannot really be classified as a DAW. Samplitude Music Studio and better still, Samplitude Pro are DAWs. But for doing many things, MusicMaker is fast and simple to use, and still quite powerful.
