Crashing Software

I recently downloaded Magix Movie Edit Pro 2016 Plus and upon beginning my first movie, the program has crashed at least 4 times. I am using an HP Pavilion laptop, with Intel Core i3-4030U CPU @1.90GHz. I have 6 GB of RAM, 64-bit Operating system, x64-based processor and Windows 10. The error says:

Hi Daneane 71, welcome to the forums.

Thank you for supplying a lot of information about your computer and the crash report. Any replies you receive here will come from fellow-users, not MAGIX support so we really need even more information if we are to be able to offer any sort of advice.

  • What type/format of video files are you working with in this project that keeps crashing?
  • What, exactly, are you attempting to do at the precise point when the crash occurs?
  • Is any crash "repeatable" i.e. a certain set of actions will ALWAYS provoke a crash, or is it rather more random?

One thought: I think the spec of your computer is a little on the "low" side for any "complicated" editing; specifically, your CPU and the amount of RAM you have.

Also, how much hard drive space do you have? If you have only the internal hard drive, especially if it is quite a slow one (e.g. only 5400 rpm) it is possible that it cannot cope with the demands of simultaneously reading from the operating system, the program and your video files for playback, whilst also trying to write the data for your editing decisions. Unfortunately, perhaps, video editing is very demanding of any computer, especially if you are attempting to edit any sort of High Definition video files.

Thank you. I have 711GB remaining of 904GB available so I'm not running low on hard drive space. I'm using jpg and mov (converted to mp4 using movavi as recommended by another user) files. Most recently, it's crashing every time I try to add a new transition or fade. I cannot recall if that is what caused the first two crashes. I just tried opening my project again and when I added a photo to the timeline, my cursor has disappeared within the program. I can use it fine outside of it, so it apparently has "frozen".

Thanks for the additional information.

Just a couple of thoughts: mp4 is a "container" format, whose contents can vary considerably, in terms of definition, the type of codec needed to read them, etc.. (I assume you've converted them from .mov because of the "security" worries of having QuickTime installed? If so, I think the convenience of having QT installed more than outweighs those security concerns, especially if you ensure you do not install the browser add-on.)

Anyway, back to those mp4 files. First, I would recommend downloading the free MediaInfo from https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo. Install it and using the Tree view, point it to any one of those mp4 files. Copy and paste the resulting report to your next reply; that should give us a lot more information about the actual files you are using.

In the meantime, I assume you do not have any problems when importing a jpg file? If so, try inserting one jpg to the timeline, followed by one mp4. Can you "play" the timeline"? If yes, add another jpg and another mp4, and so on until any crash happens. If no, try a different mp4, and repeat the procedure until you are able to isolate the cause of the problem. (My suspicion is that one or more of those mp4 files are somehow "corrupt".)

Also, what happens if you start a completely new project? Does a crash occur very quickly or only after a certain number of files have been added?

And, do you know if your internal hard drive is an SSD or a standard HDD? If the latter, what is its speed? As I wrote before, if it runs at 5400 rpm it may simply not be fast enough to handle all the input and output data you need it to do. OTOH, if its speed is the other common one of 7200 rpm it ought to be OK.

Hi,

It also looks like you have not updated to the latest patch.

CrashDump 20170128_172222_v15.0.0.90.dmp

which is 15.0.0.107.

Try updating then see if that helps.

Hi,

I'm surprised. It is under Help, Update online. There is also extra Install extra content right below Update if you purchased MEP online, not if you used an installation CD. Did you do either of these? If not, then you may want to look at my tutorials on Getting started and Basic editing Part 1 (Part 2 will come someday).

Surprised - you have been at this since 2012 and you didn't notice the online update. Of course, I keep finding new features that have been there for years, so I understand. Can't see for lookin'.

Hi Daneane71

The crash log you posted looks incomplete - was there more or is that all there was?

. . . . the program has crashed at least 4 times. I am using an HP Pavilion laptop . . . .

Does the crash occur relatively quickly from starting the program or after you have been editing for a while?

Depending on which model of HP Pavilion laptop - notebook? - you have, I suspect that the crashing may be caused by overheating - see this HP article - there are some useful tips on checking your laptop.

Hello John. I am going to paste the entire crash log (you're correct, it was incomplete). The crash occurs almost instantly after opening my movie and attempting almost anything (adding a photo, trying to add a fade, literally almost anything I do causes the crash). My laptop does not get warm at all (I've had to use chill pads with others, but not this one). Any help at all would be appreciated. Also, I did install the patch suggested by browj2 and it didn't help at all.

This is the most recent crash notification. In addition to crashing, sometimes the program freezes up after a crash and I have to use Task Manager to shut it down.

Hi Daneane71

Thanks for the full error log - the common error through the later crashes is:

. . . Error in module "mxmpeg2_x64.dll" (Load address: 0x00007FFF370C0000) to address 0x00007FFF370D18B7 (Exception 0xc0000005 "ACCESS_VIOLATION") . . . .

Are you using the 'Create proxy files' option in the projects settings?

As emmrecs has suggested can provide MediaInfo data on one of the video files that causes the crash.

What setting did you select in MovAvi for the conversion.

Hello,

I wasn't using the proxy setting, however I just turned it on.

I selected mp4 for the MovAvi conversion.

This is the tree view report using MediaInfo and using the one mov file I converted to mp4.

Daneane, unfortunately you have pointed MediaInfo to the .hdp file, rather than the original video file! (See the file name on the report line "Complete name :G:\2012\2-5-2012\P1010952_mp4.HDP")

We need the report on the file that ends .mp4, not mp4.HDP.

Hi Daneane71

. . . . Complete name :G:\2012\2-5-2012\P1010952_mp4.HDP . . . .

Is this the file you are trying to load to the timeline? If so then you are loading the wrong file.

The .HDP file is a temporary file that MEP creates when you add the mp4 to the timeline. I am guessing that you do not have file extensions visible in Windows Explorer - in which case the file to analyse, and loading into MEP, will appear as P1010952.

In Windows Explorer and the view set to Large icon view then you should see a still frame from the video for the file icon.

If you have windows explorer set to Details view then under the type column you should see mp4 video on the same line as the video name.

No, it's the video file without the HDP extension on the file name that I placed into the movie.

Hi Daneane71

Can you post the MediaInfo data for the video file please.

Also try deleting any proxy files created, HDP and H0 files related to the clip you are adding to the timeline - if any one of these is corrupt then it could cause the problem.

Hi Daneane71

Yes you did - for some reason it was not displayed when I looked at the post. 😟

The MP4 data does not show what the Audio sampling rate is, however in the MOV file data I see that it is not a standard sampling rate ie it is 16 kHz, the standards being 44.1 or 48 kHz which MEP will accept.

Try converting the MOV file again using MovAvi but change the MP4 conversion audio settings to the same as those shown below

Your dialog may look slightly different, the above is from version 15.

Then load this converted file into a new porject in MEP>

I'm cautiously optimistic... I followed your instructions on the video conversion and started a new movie. I dare say so far so good!!! I'm going to keep adding effects and other media to ensure that the issue was the mp4 conversion. I thank you so much!!!
