Crash on importing ProRes video

kvok wrote on 12/30/2020, 8:46 AM

I am trying to import a ProRes .mov video to Video Pro X 11 (17.0.3.68 from Humble Bundle) that I bought in Humble Software Bundle: Video Creator's VFX, but it always result in crash - it does so with drag'n'drop from Windows Explorer, also during an attempt to play a preview from Video Pro X - it is even enough to open the folder in Media Pool and hover the cursor over trim or import icon on the file icon. I am not certain whether Video Pro X is supposed to support it and if it doesn't I'll deal with it, but an error message instead of crash would be appreciated.

This is MediaInfo output for one of the files:

I tried importing it to Vegas Movie Studio 16 Platinum too and at first it asked for installing QuickTime. I did so and after that it stopped asking for the QuickTime and I could add it to "Project Media", but wasn't able to do anything with it (like put it on timeline). I know this is not VEGAS forum, I don't ask for help with Vegas Movie Studio, I am putting this info here in case it is useful for debugging the issue in Video Pro X, which I'd like to use. Installing QuickTime didn't seem to change anything for Video Pro X.

System configuration: Windows 10 Education @ HP Envy x360 bq-100nc (the first laptop with Ryzen APU)

Thank you for your help.

Hi

AFAICS Video Pro X (VPX) does not support Pro-Res 4444 video format ie ProRes 444 with Alpha channel.

VPX does support import of video with Alpha channels, however only in AVI format.

You can try converting the MOV files with Handbrake.

Thank you for your reply. Since AVI is just a container, which codec to choose? Which one both supports alpha and is supported by Video Pro X? I tried Ut Video with no success. I also gave a shot to VP9 webm with the same result.

So far I have used Shotcut to export the video to H.264 and then used Chroma key in MAGIX to get rid of the black background as a workaround.

Hi

I think the the only one that will work in VPX will be Uncompressed 32Bit (w/Alpha) AVI.

I doubt Vegas Movie studio would support professional 10bit 12bit 444 formats.

Be aware that VPX12 18.0.1.89 appears to have removed some support (eg Export) for .MOV (Apple) professional codecs. VPX11 should still be okay though.

Hi

. . . . which codec to choose? . . . .  export the video to H.264 and then used Chroma key in MAGIX to get rid of the black background as a workaround. . . . .

The Codec format on the Alpha channel videos I have that work as intended is:

Format                                   : RGBA
Codec ID                                 : 0x00000000
Codec ID/Info                            : Basic Windows bitmap format. 1, 4 and 8 bpp versions are palettised. 16, 24 and 32bpp contain raw RGB samples.

Another codec that supports Alpha is Motion PNG, however VPX refuses to load this encoded format.

As you have discovered using Chromakey Black is a good alternative after conversion to AVI/MP4/HEVC.
