Cost?

Good morning all...captjack ere.

Last year I purchased the Pro X 13 as one of my customers uses Magix and wanted me to finish and refine a video for him. I did so and payed about 200 or so $ for it. Many years ago I purchased DaVinci Resolve 12 for about the same price. Recently I have been pounded with an ad for the latest update to Pro X (called Studio now), for a cost of about 80$. DaVinci Resolve is on 18.1.1 currently and I have never been charged a penny for all the upgrades the new programs. What is with the Magix people?

Every one have a wonderful holiday season and stay safe....

OH! Thanks to JE Brown for the great how to videos that brought me up to speed fast...

@jack-scurlock If you upgrade from the last version you would pay the same amout as if you would upgrade from a version that's 10 years old. I think that's a fair way to handle patient customers. So if you don't need the latest release there is no need to upgrade. You can usually skip upgrades for many years until a new feature is introduced that you want. There are other companies out there, if you don't buy their software upgrades every two or three years you need to pay the full price again.

@jack-scurlock

Greetings and well wishes to you too sir.

I think the fundamental difference between DaVinci Resolve and VPX is DaVinci Resolve Pro is given away free to those people who buy Black Magic hardware and is a necessary piece of software that connects their hardware together or enables for a better working solution if you own any of their cameras. As such they get lifetime support and I guess for the few people that only buy the Pro version of the software and no hardware, it is is not worth Black Magic's time or effort to differentiate their customer base. Magix on the other hand is purely a software developer. The Black Magic software is a bit of an unusual case for a bit of software.

Hi

. . . . with an ad for the latest update to Pro X (called Studio now) . . . .

Pro X is not called Studio - check the ad again, the only Suite in the Magix range is Movie Studio Suite - formerly call Movie Edit Pro.

VPX is available in Video Pro X (perpetual licence), Video Pro X 365 - subscription, or the Upgrade versions.

Thank you for all the comments and explanations. I must be confused as I purchased Magix Video Pro X (13). Perhaps I need to apologize to the Magix people. I do notice that Magix is tending towards Resolve in many ways. We all have our favorite editing programs and should use the ones that we are most comfortable with. I wish you all and your families a most wonderful holiday season...please stay safe...captjack..
