Copying objects / ranges from one project to another

Trevor-Atchison wrote on 1/22/2022, 11:07 AM

Hi everyone!

I'm making a series of videos using Video Pro X (version 17), and I'd like to re-use the intro and outro from the first video in the others, but I can't figure out how to copy the video, music and title objects from one project to another. Selecting them in the timeline, copying, opening a new project, and pasting just gives a "clipboard is empty" message.

What's the best way to import objects / clips from one project into another?

Hi,

There are several ways.

One:

Copy everything that you want to a new Movie, give it an appropriate name, Export the Movie (.MVD). Open the new project, import the Movie (.MVD), copy and paste from that Movie to the other one. Delete the imported Movie if you want.

Two:

Use the Project Temp Folder. Create a virtual folder, insert (right-click the object - Insert object in Project Folder) everything that you want from the timeline into the PTF virtual folder. Save the project folder. Load the project folder into the new project. Open the virtual folder and you now have access to all of the objects with effects and you can put them on the timeline. Clean up the PTF when you want.

Three:

Save the project with a new name like My Intro-Outro Template 1. Delete everything that you don't need. Save. Do a Save As name of your new project and start editing. Change the Movie name(s) of course. For the next one, open the Template file, do a Save As...repeat.

Four:

Open your new project. Now Open the project that has your Intros/Outros, etc., but add it to the current project when asked. New Movies will be created. Now copy/paste from the old project to the new one (from one Movie to another). Delete any Movies that you no longer need.

If you don't know how to use Movies or the Project Temp Folder, consult the manual.

EDIT: I have several Template Projects that include certain objects along with coloured and named tracks. You may want to do the same.

Five (for MEP; I assume also for VPX):

Group your intro objects (which must include a title).

Right Click on the title and choose "Save as special effect"

In your new project, Templates Tab> My Templates > My Own, bring the special effect you saved down onto the timeline. All the objects of your saved Intro appear.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Thanks!

I opted to use the "template project" approach that @browj2 suggested. So far so good.

I appreciate the advice!

@AAProds

Hi Alwyn,

Good one! That way the objects come in with everything, including transitions and effects.

@Trevor-Atchison

Here is a refinement for creating and using templates.

1. Coloured and Name Tracks Template

I like to have coloured tracks with names. To put names on tracks, something first has to be on the track, so I just added an image and moved it down track by track and added the track name each time.

With nothing on the timeline and just my coloured tracks, export the Movie and give it a template name for coloured and named tracks type x. Also, save the project with the same or similar name.

Start a new project with the template, Save As and change the Project name and the Movie name and you have the coloured and named tracks. Now, if you want a second and third Movie to also have the same coloured and named tracks, import the template Movie (MVD file) multiple times, each time selecting to change the name.

2. Objects to be reused individually

For example, in my tutorials I use a few things like the arrow pointer and a circular animation as well as my intro video, my outro music, and some short audio files that I made with Music Maker to be used when changing topics. The arrow pointer and circular animation have the size modified and then entered into the Project Temp Folder. Anything that I dont need for my template is removed from the PTF. Save with an appropriate name.

New project with coloured and named tracks, import the template PTF and the objects are there, ready to be used.

3. Object to be reused as a Group

For example, I have an Outro that I use for certain videos that contains short images or video clips along with the name of the person, closing credits, and some music. There are effects and transitions.

This is a perfect one for using @AAProds' method.

Or, keep them in various template Movie files and import them and copy them from Movie to Movie when needed.

Note that since you have VPX, you can use the imported Movie as an object on the timeline of the main Movie. Drag the second movie from the PTF onto the timeline of the first Movie. If necessary, change the contents of the second Movie (update title, etc.) and the Movie object in the main Movie gets updated. Look up Movie Objects (page 95) in the manual.
