The only way to join them as one is to export.

What I usually do is group object like that so if I was to move them, they would all move as one. To do this, you select each object (ctrl+left click on additional objects) and then use the group icon found in the arranger toolbar area (looks like a chain link).

If the object is a text or photo, I just use the trim handles to stretch them to the desired length.

John's answer works very well if you want the objects to behave as if they were one object.  The fastest way I know of to just place copied objects so that they basically butt up against each other is to do it in the scene over view mode, select the object you want to copy, right click, select copy object, right click again, then select paste object as many times as you want to paste it, and they will look basically like one continuous object.  This only works with video or photo objects.
