convert left channel mono to stereo sound

ogleable wrote on 6/13/2012, 2:30 AM

My video was shot with a lavalier microphone so the camera put all the audio on the left channel only.

I would like to put the left channel audio onto both channels so that the audio plays through both speakers instead of just the left speaker.

I can't figure out how to access any kind of left/right editing.

aqleable,

First guess would be to do a 'File' >> Export as WAV' and choose 'Mono' as the output type. Then import this into your project and mute the original. A mono audio should come put both channels equally.

I don't do much with audio now but am sure there are other options like the 5.1 surround editor (if you have the appropriate version of MEP and computer audio setup) where you can place sound in 3D space.

ADDED: Go to the Mixer, [M] key shortcut, and click on the '5.1 surround' button near the top right.

Regards,

Carl

Hi. Here is how to do it.

1. Select the object that you want to convert.

2. press Alt+A (audio cleaning)

3. click on StereoFX tab

4. check the StereoFX checkbox

5. under the Preset dropbox, choose Both channels = left.

Press the play button to test that the lav mic sound is now coming from both sides.

Best regards,

:) Despite the age, I was notified that there was an answer on my thread.
Thank you for the response, though by now so much has changed in that I don't even think I could replicate this issue.

360rumors, many thanks for posting the answer.  Really helped me out last night as had fed in theatre mics to left hand channel but picked up lighting desk chatter on the right.

Thanks netnoggin!

I know this thread is already several years old, indeed I commented so myself in an earlier post, but just in case someone else finds it in the future whilst searching for a solution to the problem of audio in one channel only, I wanted to add one detail which I think has been overlooked, especially given that the thread title refers to converting "left channel mono to stereo audio".

There is one important thing to remember about ANY and all the given solutions to this problem: the outcome is most definitely NOT stereo audio, it is, in fact, dual mono. Duplicating the audio of one track, say Left, into the other, Right, does allow you to hear sound from both speakers. But, since stereo depends upon placing a sound in the soundscape (different levels of a given sound will make the ear accept that the sound is "coming from" the speaker with the "louder" sound, it is what in the mixer the Pan control is for) because each element of the sound is equal in both speakers/channels, there can be none of the horizontal (and to some extent vertical) placement of a sound which is the essence of "stereo" sound.

"Stereo FX" may attempt to simulate this placement of sounds in the soundfield but it is always going to be somewhat artificial, to say the least. If the eye perceives an object as being on the left of the video, the ear will tend to expect its "sound" to also come from the left speaker. Even the best "stereo fx" cannot possibly know where, in the visual field, is the object whose sound is being "effected".

(Will now get down from my soapbox!)

Thank you 360rumors. That answer was not obvious, but now that I know...

Emmrecs, thank you too. Noted. If I needed the stereo separation, I'd edit the audio, but dual mono was good enough for the video project I was working on.

Another five years later, and this response helped me solve another issue I was having, so thanks.
