Connecting Guitar To PC (Windows 10 Pro) And Hear The Guitar Playing

Windows 10 Pro, 64 Bit

Music Maker 2024, Version 32.0.1.8

Hello,
Main question is, if I can connect my guitar to the PC, play the guitar and hear the guitar through my computer's speakers or headphones. I have a guitar UBS cable. If possible, would you have a link directing me on how to achieve such?

Thanks

@Oka To hear your playing you need to select an ASIO driver in the program settings of Music Maker. Ideally, this should be the ASIO driver of your audio interface which your guitar is connected to.

Hi

. . . . I have a guitar UBS cable . . . .

Is this a genuine branded preamplifier/analog to digital converter such as the Rocksmith Realtone cable ?

Hello, here's what I have.

@Oka To hear your playing you need to select an ASIO driver in the program settings of Music Maker. Ideally, this should be the ASIO driver of your audio interface which your guitar is connected to.

Hello, it is connected straight to the PC with the USB cable, through the Sound Blaster sound card.

SP. wrote on 1/25/2024, 9:22 AM

@Oka Can you show us a photo or sketch of how exactly everything is connected?

Maybe it works if you select the Music Maker ASIO driver in the program settings and then click on the Advanced button next to the driver selection to open the driver settings and select your USB cable as the audio input and the Soundblaster as the audio output. Set the ASIO sample buffer size to something reasonable like 512 samples.

Hi

Thanks for the image of the cable - this is a generic device which, when plugged in to a motherboard, or front panel, USB port on the PC should appear in the Windows Device Manager, Sound video & game controllers section.

If the cable device is listed in Sound video & game controllers, or in the USB controllers section as 'Unknown device', then there may be a driver or cable device issue.

. . . . connected straight to the PC with the USB cable, through the Sound Blaster sound card . . . .

Is this an external USB Sound Blaster device, or internal SB audio card with USB port(s) and which model?

it's an internal Sound Blaster card. However, I still have not been able to install the Creative driver, just now using the Windows driver.

Hi

. . . it's an internal Sound Blaster card. . . .

Is this one of the current AE- models or an older Audigy audio card?

AFAIK there has never been a Sound Blaster audio card with USB ports.

Did you try connecting the cable to a USB port on the motherboard?

Hi,

I think that it would help if you gave us the specs for your guitar. Is it a MIDI guitar? Which model?

Since you show a 1/4" jack and a USB cable I presume that it is a MIDI guitar that can send sound from the pickup to an amplifier or the audio in of a computer, and/or MIDI notes to a computer. The two are completely different.

Since I don't have a MIDI guitar, I am going to presume that it works just like a keyboard that can send out both audio and MIDI.

EDIT: For audio recording, normally you would plug in the 1/4" jack to an amplifier and then use the line out of the amplifier to the line in on the Sound Blaster card.

Alternatively, for audio, you can try plugging in the 1/4" jack to the computer/Sound Blaster which most likely does not have a 1/4" input, so you have to use a 1/4"-TRS 3.5mm adaptor. Then, in Music Maker, you have to go to the Program Settings, Audio/MIDI tab, and select the Wave driver. The computer is going to behave like an amplifier, I presume

Then, in Music Maker, on the track that you want to record to, toggle the record button in the track header to be AUDIOREC. Under recording parameters (gear shaped button beside the rec Record button), under Audio line-in, select the input - this should be the line in on the Sound Blaster card.

You should now be able to play your guitar and hear it.

MIDI - USB cable

To use the USB cable for MIDI recording, plug it in to your computer.

in Music Maker, on the track that you want to record to, toggle the record button in the track header to be MIDI_REC. Select a VST instrument, probably a guitar.

In Music Maker, go to the Program Settings, Audio/MIDI tab, open the dropdown under Audio playback, select an ASIO driver, then under MIDI, Input Device and select the correct input. This should be your guitar USB-MIDI.

Play your guitar. You should now hear the VST instrument playing and you can record to MIDI, not audio.

Hi John

. . . . Since you show a 1/4" jack and a USB cable I presume that it is a MIDI guitar  . . . .

The cable is a generic Guitar analog to USB converter/pre-amp - as seen here.

There are many different 'unknown' brands available and look to be 'clones' of the Behringer cable.

If this is one of the 'clones' then there is the possibility that the cable is not what it purports to be, ie it is wired straight through, with an LED to show it is 'on' and no pre-amp + converter in the plug.

I have seen this with alleged Firewire to USB converters.

Hi John EB,

Now I'm even more confused.

Hello, it is connected straight to the PC with the USB cable, through the Sound Blaster sound card.

But, as you say, a Sound Blaster doesn't have a USB port.

If it's not a MIDI guitar, then why get a Guitar analog to USB converter/pre-amp cable and not just plug the guitar into the amp and the amp to the line-in of the computer/Sound Blaster? Or, presuming that it works, just use a 1/4"-3.5mm adapter plugged in to the mic port(does this work with no pre-amp)? I am assuming that the OP does have an amplifier.

@Oka did not come back with the suggestion by @SP. to select an ASIO driver, Advanced and select the USB cable as the audio input and the Soundblaster (or something else) as the audio output. So, we don't know if this was done.

Hi John

. . . . why get a Guitar analog to USB converter/pre-amp cable and not just plug the guitar into the amp and the amp to the line-in of the computer/Sound Blaster? . . . .

There are many reasons for 'direct recording:- no amp, amp may have no line out, noise abatement in a domestic setting, require direct recording of guitar with no amp 'generated sounds' for adding different amp characteristics in edit.
