You're not missing anything, it's one of the confusingly missing workflow features still left in ACID Pro (along with not being able to freeze audio tracks).
Anyway, I think the way to do this unfortunately, is to solo the track in question, render it out to a stereo or mono wav file, then re-import it to your project as a new track. Someone correct me if there's another way.

Yup, you are right. That's the only way known to me as well.
