Closing gap?

terrypin wrote on 11/24/2016, 8:40 AM

It's been a while since I last opened MEP 2016 and I sure am rusty!

For example, am I imagining it or should it be possible to close a gap between clips A and B by r-clicking the A|B 'transition icon' and choosing Cut? Nothing happens here, in any of the three mouse modes. I have to drag B leftwards instead.

Hi Terry and welcome back,

You absence was noted and concern raised. I trust that you are keeping well.

So far as I know, the only way to close up gaps is manually. The A|B buttons are for transitions only. VPX has a way to search for and go to gaps, but not close them up. MEP does not have this feature. I believe that the reason is that automatically closing up a gap could create other problems, like moving objects on other tracks that should not be moved.

The best way is to avoid the gaps in the first place by using Ctrl+Del, or switching to single or mult-track mouse mode and then deleting or trimming. This avoids the gap, but can create problems on other tracks if you are not careful.

Can you check out TRA? It no longer works for me in MEP2016 or VPX. In 2016, it starts with script errors and I never get a map. In VPX, I get the map, route but can't preview or save the animation. I don't have 2017.

Best regards,

Hi John,

Thanks!

I've been preoocupied with a lot of other stuff but hope to resume activity soon - before I forget even more of the basics.

That's a nuisance about the gap closing method. I've just dusted off my old XP PC and it works fine in MEP 2014 and MEP 2013. I prefer it to dragging, which unless I'm careful ends up with an overlap crossfade. Maybe there are downsides, but I can't recall them.

Just tried TRA and got a map up OK in MEP 2016.

Hi Terry

Apologies for the late answer, however we have just got back near civilisation with Internet access after nearly 2 weeks in the 'wilderness' - no phone no Internet, just kangaroos, koalas, galahs and sunny beaches - heaven .

We discussed the issue of gap closing just after MEP 2016 was released and the official line from Magix was that this was by design.

Certainly, as John CB says, the auto closing in previous versions did cause unexpexted issues with multiple tracks in use.

Hi John,

Heaven indeed, apart from the long trip. (I'm off to San Diego in a week or so. At  nearly 12 hours that's bad enough.) Around zero here this morning. (What John CB would call 'mild'.)

Did you get to see Carl, who said he was expecting you?

Hi John and Terry,

It seems like we've all had a busy time recently. Terry, I was in Washington in September, caught the last day of Oktoberfest in Munich, and spent almost 3 weeks in Mozambique. I watched your Spanish video, so we know where you've been. Was that Vasco da Gama that you used at the beginning? Did you upgrade to 2017?

I see that Kraznet (Martin - Samplitude) is also down-under for 2 or 3 months.

As for the weather, on Nov. 19, I was out in shirtsleeves cleaning up the yard for winter, which arrived 2 days later on the 21st. A rude awakening:

I did up a basic editing tutorial and submitted it almost 2 weeks ago. Haven't seen it show up yet. I mention gaps and how to avoid them, I think.

Hello terrypin, I have not used Magix for several months, but found your question now, and have experimented a little with "closing problems". I have the 2016 Premium.

The CTRL/DEL removes and closes a Marked clip, regardless of MouseModus 6, 7 or 8.

Shortcuts Z and U removes and closes in mousemod. 7 and 8, but not in 6 (Single object)

I experimented with a few min. of video, and made 6 "black holes", and found this: First find one of the holes (f. i. by clicking <) and close the gap by hand. Then click the A/B and click Apply to all objects in the track. Here, this works regardless of the Mousmod. I use.

Andreas,

Great find, and so simple, we missed it! The only problem is that if there are some good transitions downstream, they get changed as well. But, at least the gaps are closed up.

Thanks,

Hi

I will echo John CBs comment - great find. However when i tried to use the < shortcut it did not work.

Looking through the default Keyboard shortcut list I found that, in my case, the 'Go to next empty range' and 'Go to prevoius empty range' were set to Shift+unknown.

Once the shortcuts were assigned, as they say here down under - 'no worries'.

Thanks Andreas
