Choppy playback, impossible to watch!

rwwdjw7 wrote on 7/20/2015, 5:19 PM

New user here...bought Magix Movie Edit Pro 2015 a couple months ago and have become very frustrated!

Excited to get going, I recorded various length videos off my android phone (from 30 seconds to 2 minutes) and cant get a single one to play smoothly after loading!  They all play great in media player, but once loaded into this program, I cant figure out how to watch the raw footage without all the stops/starts,

I have an HP laptop...added another 3GB to internal memory (now have 5GB, vs 2)...no difference at all in playback.  This takes me to 100% no matter the size of the file...very frustrating.

If I cannot figure this out, will need to give this one up and try another program...HELP!

Thanks,

Randy

Hi

What is the laptop specification, Windows version and is it 32 or 64 bit?

What resolution are the Android videos?

Hi

Thanks for the information, however we still need to know the laptop specification, ie processor, graphics chipset, hard drive size etc.

Sorry about that...not real savvy with tech stuff!

AMD Athlon II P340 dual-core processor 2.20 GHz

Total hard disk size:  298 GB

Graphics display adapter type:  AMD M880G

is that everything?

Thanks again!

Hi

Thanks for the specification.

The laptop is under powered for getting smooth preview playback with HD (720p) or full HD (1080i or 1080p) video..

To improve preview performance you can try the following:

  1. Open the Project/movie settings (E key) and turn on Automatically create proxy files - see note below

  2. Right click the lightning symbol bottom right of the Preview monitor and turn on Reduce resolution, Reduce framerate and Use proxy objects if not turned on already.

Note:    If you do this to an existing project this may take a while to create the proxy files, also you may find you start to run out of hard disc space - proxy files can be larger than the originals because they are less compressed to make it easier for the computer to play them better.

If the above are already set or there is no improvement then it may be time to consider a more powerful laptop/computer.

Hi Randy,

John has great advice about creating proxy files and then clicking the blue lightning button to actually use the proxy files.

I would like to add that I had done exactly that myself and was still having massive playback issues.

My playback problem did not get fixed until I also checked the "Deactivate Plugins" options; (found by right clicking on the lightning button.)

One step further; you can also turn off effects, turning them back on only when you need to adjust one, and then turning them back off again. (Also found by right clicking the lightning button.)

These actions dropped my playback from 100% on my PC down to 5%-7% !

Nathan

P.S. Thanks John for explaining why the proxy files were larger than the original files. That really bothered me when I first discovered that, and thought "How unhelpful is this? Even larger files?!!
But your explanation helped me to understand.
