Cartoon R Plus effects

Movie Studio 2023 version 22.0.2.172 Cartoon R Plus effects cause the PC to crash every time I use the burn Blu-ray disc process. The crash occurs at the point in the video that the cartoon R Plus special effect is situated. By moving the position of the effect in the video also moves the crash to the corresponding portion of the burn process.

Hi Robert and welcome to the user to user forums.

Although the specs page for the program gives you the minimum requirements to run the program there is a disclaimer (or at least there used to be) that you may need a higher specified computer when dealing with more component intensive effects such as the supplied third party effects.

If you are able to play the project through with no problem then there may be two possible ways to overcome this problem.

1: Change your Program Settings so the Import, Processing and Export options are all set to only use the CPU. The export burn may take longer to complete but may export without problems.

2: Export the project to an MP4 file first so all effects are already baked in and use that to create your DVD by re-importing it into MMS 2023 and making the DVD template after.

Personally I would opt for solution 2:

Ray.

@CubeAce Hi, that was my first thought 👍 @Robert-Day on my PC, specs in +signature at the bottom of this comment, Cartoon R Plus can slow things down quite a lot, if you're applying this effect & then asking MMS to burn a disc maybe you're asking too much, do it a step at a time.

The crash occurs at the point in the video that the cartoon R Plus special effect is situated

If the effect is just at one point you might be able to get away with exporting just that part using the blue Range at the top of the timeline & Export range only in the export window that pops up, then replace that section on the timeline with the short exported clip. This is fairly common practice on complicated sections that contain effects that inhibit performance.

Robert-Day wrote on 9/29/2023, 10:32 AM

Thank you both for your comments. I will try out your options in the next few days.

Former user wrote on 9/29/2023, 10:43 AM

@Robert-Day 👍 Sometimes it's good to save your project under a different name each time you make changes, like replacing clips with exported sections as suggested, make the project name clear so you know which is which, eg. 'Day out - With exported cartoon clip'. , you can do this as many times as you wish so you always have the orig or a previous version to fall back on if you need to.

@Robert-Day

Hi Robert.

I've been trying out the New Blue Cartooner Plus effect for myself and have found the following restrictions using my computer. (Specs in my Signature).

I can't mix file types or frame rates on a transition containing the effect and export without crashing any of my Video editing packages. I can't export to 4K at all as it crashes my system whether I use MEP / VPX / MMS 16 or Vegas Pro 18.

At exporting at HD the effect is making use of my nvidia 1650 Super but it needs an additional 1.1GBs of additional system reserved ram on top of the 4GBs my card has. I Imagine when trying to export at 4K that would be a lot more but can't find out as the programs crash as soon as they reach the effect. Even at the resolution needed to create a BluRay I would think it will need around three and a half GBs of vram. I have noticed that sometimes with only some effects the amount of motherboard ram that can be used without crashing varies a lot. I have seen up to 10GBs of motherboard ram used with no ill effect. Other times more than 2GBs used has resulted in my system crashing.

Either way the effect needs a fare bit of ram. It can be exported using only a CPU but the export times for seconds seem to be hours to complete.

Perhaps @Former user could try at 4K to see if his beast of an nvidia card can overcome this or the effect does not work at 4K resolutions. I strongly suspect the latter as the New Blue site does not even mention 4K compatibility.

[Edit] I have just read and realised that that page states the plugins do not support transitions in the Magix programs. The transition you see below was done in Vegas. I only tried to export the effect to a clip in MMS.

The effect itself limits itself to 30fps while running even though the export may be higher. That could maybe also the cause of crashing, of that I'm not sure.

All in all the Cartooner Plus is a very graphics intensive plugin which is only to be expected.

@CubeAce  Hi, I should've tried this but like i say 'Cartoon R Plus can slow things down quite a lot', just tried it on a couple of UHD Constant 30p MP4s, one clip untouched, the other with Cartoon R Plus @ default settings, a crossfade between the two won't play & prerender does pretty much nothing to help. Exporting has been going on for 7mins 😂🤦‍♂️ it flew through the untouched 1st clip but getting to the crossfade onto the next clip with Cartoon it hit a wall, it looks like it's past the crossfade but still only edging along very slowly, I'll try it with just cartoon n let you know the result of this n that, GPU was doing most of the work when playing.

---------

19mins the preview screen has gone black, I'll leave it running & see if the result is of any use or just garbage

-----------

I stopped it 34mins because i realised those clips were UHD but 59.94 not 30p.

I'll try it with UHD & FHD 30p clips.

----------

I tried it with the FHD 30p clips first, almost the same result, no play of the crossfade & export was extremely slow once it hit the crossfade/cartoon. I didn't wait for the export, I just cancelled

Playing & Export

Just one clip with Cartoon export was ticking along slowly, estimated 5mins for a 17sec clip * Taskmanager showed very little activity as in the pic above.

I tried it with Vegas,

Magix AVC FHD rendered in 30secs 👍

But UHD with Magix AVC & Voukoder both stalled, didn't wait for them.

-----------

Final attempt, I converted the two UHD 30 clips to ProRes UHD 30, same result on render, it slowed down at the cartoon bit, It was going a bit faster but got bored & didn't wait for it to finish.

Hi Gid.

MMS / VPX doesn't allow transitions of the Cartooner Plus effect although you can apply it to one or the other clip and have the effect fade in or out. The effect can only produce a maximum frame rate of 30fps according to the controls and seems to have the effect of producing a 'shadow lag' for the want of a better description. My system has no problem with playing that without the use of proxy files but can't render it at it's native 4K. It always results in a crash, but at HD it takes about twice the length of time of the cross-fade to render.

@CubeAce  Yep, I know it's not an option in MMS as a transition so i was just trying it on the second clip & dragging a crossfade, I'm not 100% sure what the OP meant by -

The crash occurs at the point in the video that the cartoon R Plus special effect is situated. By moving the position of the effect in the video also moves the crash to the corresponding portion of the burn process

So i was just assuming it was an effect on a clip & repeated the same in Vegas 🤷‍♂️

--

I just tried it as a transition in Vegas UHD, it did slow during the transition but 1min 15secs for that short project is ok. 👍

-------------

I added Cartoon to just a section i cut off the start of the second clip & dragged it to crossfade, export slowed to a painfully slow crawl at the transition, it did complete but I can imagine this crashing a lesser machine.

Hi Gid.

From my end then it is definitely a problem with the settings within MMS. Something is off.

After reading your post above I just tried setting all my program settings for Import / Processing / Export to CPU

MMS (In my case MEP 2022) exported to 4K but also used the nvidia card but at a much reduced amount.

What???? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

The export was slower but not a crawl as it normally would be just using the CPU alone.

Something very odd going on here and I suspect it's whatever they have done to Infusion Engine III.

@CubeAce I think more to do with Cartooner than anything else, Vegas performed better than MMS but was still slow on the cartoony bit & i just tried it in Hitfilm pro, it didn't crash but wouldn't play the timeline properly & exporting it stopped at the crossfade & declared an error.

Hi.

Hiffilm Pro is not even on the New Blue compatibility list of programs, so not overly surprising.

Vegas does not render as fast on my machine with Cartooner as MMS / VPX does and I still can't find an export setting for 4K that doesn't crash the program as soon as the Cartooner effect kicks in. HD works fine but still slower to render and it can be used as a transition. You could be right about it being Cartooner as the NB Stabilizer effect is listed as not working for either.

Hi

Have you looked at the Quantize option in the Effects, Video Effects, Art Filter effect in MMS 2023/24, this may, with careful adjustment, give you what you are looking for.

Also try adding in the Substitution and/or Dye options.

I cannot test CartoonR as I am working from my laptop and do not have it installed.

Hi John.

Funnily enough I had tried that for another query earlier in the year on a slightly different request and I can't get anywhere near what Cartooner Plus can achieve with those two options.

Pretty much the best I can do with the Art Filter.

Having said that, The art filter works much better in VPX than it does in my copy of MEP, especially Emboss.

Guys

Thank you for all your comments. Clearly a lot of interest on this issue. I can confirm that i have resolved it by creating a copy of the 4 clips within the timeline each containing the cartoonr effect and crossfades to the end of the movie and exported them to an MP4 file. I subsequently imported this file as was originally proposed by CubeAce to its correct position in the movie. I removed the transient cartoonr clips at the end of the movie and initiated the blu-ray burn process which completed first time. Here's a screen clip of the movie containing my brother in law during a spitfire experience day in cartoonr style which i used at the end of the movie with rolling credits. Thanks for all your time and effort.

Hi Rob.

No problem. We often learn new bits of information ourselves along the way and a great way of exploring what is and what is not possible.

Was that flight taken at Duxford by any chance. It is only the second two seater Spit I've seen. The first being the Grace Spitfire. That one was rebuilt and modified to a two seater from a museum exhibit of a shot down Spit originally an LF.IXe, on the 2nd July 1944.

Nice to see them fly rather than parked up.

Hi Ray

It was rebuilt from a wreck found in France and flown from a place called Headcorn Aerodrome in Kent. Part of the flight involved going out to sea and along the white cliffs of Dover. They did a few rolls and a couple of loops which was impressive and good for the movie. It may well have been the same plane you saw at Duxford.

Hi Rob.

I knew most of it's history and have even taken images of it at Headcorn on a combined Ops day but didn't know you could book a flight from there as it is based at Biggin hill. I thought the flight might have been from Duxford as several different planes can be hired for pleasure flights from Duxford and it's a more travelled to destination for most folks interested in wartime aviation. Neat experience to have. Who was in the Yellow North American T-6G Texan taking the shots? 👍

I only live about 20 miles from Headcorn and there is a warplane restoration company at Rochester airport just a few miles from me. I've seen the Texan there in the past but not the Spit.

Ray.

HI Ray,

My brother in law's son was taking pictures and videos from the other plane.

Cool! I know that plane exists but have never seen it. Must have been an excellent experience for both of them. I had a few lessons a few year back but was taken over the Sheppey area. I hope they appreciate the video. Great stuff!
