Capture/Import Mini DV Tapes Using MEP2013 (or MEP2016)

CarpentersMate wrote on 11/13/2021, 10:41 PM

Hello johnebaker and the Gang - Hope everyone are doing fine 🤓

Yes I'm fully aware MEP 2013 is ancient however I'm inquiring: With regard to Windows 7 Pro, does MEP2013 have the capability of capturing Mini DV Tapes (via firewire) 'without' the need of additional capturing software like 'windows movie maker'?

Once the camcorder is connected via firewire and turned on, will MEP2013 somehow magically recognize the source using the Import tab/option?

Using Movie Edit Pro 2016 Plus - would there necessarily be any advantage?

Thank you for your patience ... 👍

Mike

Hi Mike

. . . . does MEP2013 have the capability of capturing Mini DV Tapes (via firewire)  . . . .

It does - use the DV Camera option in the record dialog that opens after first hit of the record button - select the Firewire card driver and any other parameters for more information - see the DV Camera section in the manual pp 69-73 onwards.

. . . . will MEP2013 somehow magically recognize the source using the Import tab/option . . .

It may detect the firewire card driver, if not set it manually - do note that some Firewire cards that do not use a Texas Instruments chip and driver may not be detected.

. . . . Using Movie Edit Pro 2016 Plus - would there necessarily be any advantage? . . . .

Not for the recording.

John - Sorry I forgot to ask you if I need to set up/assign an external 'SCRATCH' Drive (as I do in Final Cut), before I can start capturing? The scratch drive is actually where the cache is stored required to capture Mini DV Tapes. Thank You!

@CarpentersMate

Hi Mike

There is no need to set up a 'scratch file' (temp file), AFAICS MEP already has one preset in the program.

You can change where the recordings are saved to in the Program Settings, Folders tab - the default location is Documents\Magix\My Record (IIRC).
