Cant open .wav files because they are not "PCM files"

Jose-Rivas wrote on 12/15/2022, 11:25 PM

Heya, sorry if this is a bad question but i bought a couple of loops in an external store and the files are in a .wav format and when I try to open them it says "This is not a PCM file".

I have no idea what that means. I thought music maker didn't open wav files but for some reason, it played only one wav file in the folder to i thought they were corrupted. I downloaded the whole loop again but it's still not letting me. Does anyone have any suggestions? All help is greatly appreciated

@Jose-Rivas

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

MM can most certainly play .wav files, I use them regularly!

So, we need to establish exactly what the files you have actually are. By definition, a .wav file must be PCM so it would seem  that there is some sort of unusual coding within those files.

So, can you tell us where you bought those loops and which ones they are?

Then, in order to analyse exactly what they are can you read and follow this tutorial to download MediaInfo and then post the results of the "View>Text" window here?

Yup, I bought them from producer loops

Here's the link

There might have been a problem while unzipping it. That's my best guess so ill keep trying

Edit: I tried another music app I have (Waveform 12) and it could play it no problem. I don't know if that helps. Also my computer can play them so I don't think they are corrupt

You could try to open the files with some other player to see if theres somethhing wrong with them, or is Music Maker just doing its thing.

Please provide the MediaInfo analysis as requested in my earlier post.

@Jose-Rivas

Thank you for that MediaInfo data.

It shows the file to be 24 bit at 44.1kHz sample rate, which MM should be able to deal with easily! (I just checked this by opening a file with the same spec in my installation of MM and there was no problem.)

The only difference I can see between mine that opened and yours that doesn't (from the MI data) is the Codec ID! Your data is "unusual" here, at least from everything I have checked!

Do you have any other audio file player on your computer that will play this file? If so, can you also do a "save as" for it from that player? I wonder whether doing so will change the codec and make it readable in MM for you.

One other thought: if you were willing and able to put one of these files on a file sharing site and send me, by Private Message, a link to download it (so the file is not available to others to download since you have bought it and it is clearly copyright) I would be happy to see whether I can open it in at least one of the DAW softwares I have and then send it back to you. At least we would then know if this can be resolved!

@emmrecs

Hi Jeff

. . . . Codec ID 00000001-0000-0010-8000-00AA00389B71 . . . .

This is a standard Windows media PCM media type identifier.

From the MediaInfo data it looks like the audio was encoded using the Lame encoder.

@johnebaker

Hi John.

Thanks for that! I have never used the Lame codec so was unaware of its ID.
