"Cant open the FTP folder: index_htm_files" error

Jeff-Kern wrote on 4/9/2022, 9:16 AM

Using Xara WDP 19.0.0.63990

Every time I attempt to upload my files to my host, i get the aforementioned pop-up window and my site will not upload. I'm admittedly quite rusty with web protocols, so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but I can't figure it out. Could really use some assistance please.

Just one single page is all i'm attempting to upload, using SFTP. Thank you.

@Jeff-Kern

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

The error message suggests you have not actually published or exported your site; this is the process which turns the WYSIWYG pages you see in Web Designer in to the web-compatible files that are your actual online site. If you are already aware of this, my apologies, but it is not unknown for web site creators to simply attempt to upload their Web Designer files to their server and expect that their site will then be visible!

As a test, can you publish your site to a folder on your computer? Open the folder and check that there is a page named "index.html" there. Since you say this is a single-page site this may be the only file in the folder, though this is highly unlikely since there would normally be several others which, together, make your site work.

I made updates to some web pages and published them. The link kept displaying the old page. The original page had 6 nav buttons, the new one 7. No matter how many times I executed the publish routine, this issue remained. Eventually I removed all the files from the server (drastic) and published again. When I used the same bookmark, I got a 404 error. If I changed the URL to be <url>/my-start-page.htm, it worked. So I looked for an index.html and found one with more code in it than I believed possible. All I want the index.htm to do is start the "my-start-page.htm. Can you give me a sample of what I need? This really shouldn't take more than a few lines.

@Jeff-Kern

Hi

Have you renamed the home/start/landing page of the website to 'my-start-page.htm' ?

If so this is the issue, the home page must be called index.htm and, depending on the template you used eg a Supersite, this one file will contain every page of the site within it, eg this is an example of a supersite with 7 pages.

The index_htm_files folder above only contains images, video clips, icons and scripting files needed for the different pages.

Note: after making changes and publishing them you may have to refresh the browser using F5 several times to get it to update the local cache and display the new page content correctly.

I have 70 web sites on a GoDaddy server. One web site will not publish and all of the publish settings are the same as the other web sites. When I try to publish this web site, I get this error: "Can't open the FTP folder: /home please make sure a valid sub-folder is specified." I have exported it to a folder on my desktop but still get the same error.

When I click on "Explore web space" all of the files are visible.

Hi

Assuming that the /home is a requirement in the FTP settings for GoDaddy and is set in the Sub-folder (optional) setting.

The error message would suggest either:

  • There is a superfluous character ie a space before or after /home in the Sub-folders(optional) setting in the Publish FTP details.

  • The name is case sensitive and entered incorrectly eg /Home

Are the 70 sites under one account and in separate folders under the one accounts server webspace or does each have its own unique webspace and account?

All sites have there own folder on the server. Here is one publish setting that works: /home/turben2/public_html/andersonroofingandrepair.com and here is the one that does not work: /home/turben2/public_html/dalemincks.com As you can see there are no extra spaces or characters on the one that does not work.

Hi

Did you check for the space in the dialog shown below - between the e and the tip of the arrow in this example?

Yes, I double checked that. There are no spaces: /home/turben2/public_html/dalemincks.com

Hi

This is very strange, as you can explore the site from within the program taking a step back

. . . .  I have exported it to a folder on my desktop but still get the same error. . . . .

Was this when trying to upload the exported site using a program such as FileZilla?

Have you contacted GoDaddy support? We had another user with a similar folder issue a while ago and the issue was there end.
