Cannot Open Video Files Recorded With OBS In MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 14

Grimbles wrote on 10/9/2024, 2:46 PM

Hello, I have been having an annoying problem with MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 14 software after reinstalling it onto my laptop after years of not using it or having it on any of my computers.

The issue is that when I record with OBS screen recorder and attempt opening the files with MAGIX, it will give me the following error:

"The file format of C:\Users\brill\Videos\2024-10-09 15-12-03.mp4 cannot be opened by MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 14!

Please make sure that the drive is not full or write-protected.

If you do not have the authorization to write or read from this path, please contact the administrator."

I have tried changing the file format OBS outputs to to other video file formats I think MAGIX may accept such as Quicktime .mov files or Matroska .mkv files and also purchased and activated the 'MPEG-4 codec update' within the "Help" menu in MAGIX, which still did not fix the issue.

I've Googled this error message and found other people who had the same issue however none of the fixes that other people have posted online have resolved this problem for me.

I am bummed because I have fond memories of using Movie Edit Pro 14 and after stumbling upon the installation disc and getting it onto my laptop I was hoping to get back into using it again for editing videos. I have been using a freeware editing software called Animotica, which while it covers what I need and is a light-weight software for editing Youtube videos, I am trying to up my game on video editing software and MAGIX seemed like a good step up from what I'm currently using.

Has anyone who uses Movie Edit Pro 14 come across this error before? If so, does anyone have any solutions for how it can be fixed?

Thank you for any help in advance.

Hi

Which version of Windows is installed on the laptop?

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one the OBS video you are trying to import, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required, post all the data.

Hi.

Upon closer inspection there is a difference in your files encoding on the line of your file

Format profile : High@L3.1

Where mine is

Format profile : High@L4.2

and looking to see if there are any other problems with that encoding I found some people using Davinci Resolve can't play files with that encoding and nor can some TV sets. I do not know whether that is down to the encoder used within the MP4 wrapper or is something else. OBS can have several choices of how it encodes depending on the hardware in use and OBS has thrown out unusable encoded files for video editors to be able to use in the past. It may be worth looking at the settings in OBS and see if you could try another encoder if it shows alternatives on your system.

This is the encoder I use that seems compatible with three of my video editing programs

As High@L4.2 does not seem to give any of my programs problems.

Ray.

HI

. . . . MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 14 . . . .

Unfortunately there has been a tendency for users to abbreviate 20xx versions to the last two numbers which has, in the past, caused confusion over which version is meant.

Can you confirm which version of Movie Edit Pro (MEP) you have, 14, released in 2008) or 2014, released in 2013.

. . . . C:\Users\brill\Videos\2024-10-11 13-40-10.mp4 . . . .

Windows 10 may be preventing MEP creating the temporary support files needed in the folder location where the file is currenly located.

Try moving the video file to the default folder location that is inside your Documents folder, ie MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro version\ , and try importing from there.

For MEP projects, no resources used in the projects should be outside the Documents folder unless on a second drive, eg external USB disc drive

Hi John.

My bad in saying 2014 when I looked up the specs for MEP 14 released in 2008.

I did however make the mistake that the files being used have been made using the latest version of OBS which has also had changes to the encoders it has used over that period in time and also dependant on the hardware in use as to what settings get used automatically on installing OBS.

Hello, thank you for swift reply. I am not able to use any other video formats or file types with MEP 2014, I tried Quicktime and .mkv files and received the same error message.

Also, how would I find out what the bit version of MEP 2014 is? When I look at it in the task manager, I do see 32-bit next to MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 14 in parenthesis, however when checking the application's properties and checking the 'Compatibility' tab, Windows Vista is listed and grayed-out which I read means a program is 64-bit.

To find the version number of the program, from the Task Manager information, it is Movie Edit Pro 14, look in the Help, About menu. The version number should be in the format 7.x.x.x where each x is one or more numbers.

Did you try moving the OBS recording to a folder within your Documents folder and loading it into MEP 14?

@Grimbles

Hello Grimbles,

It is still unknown whether you have MEP14 from 2008 or MEP2014 from 2013 on your computer. I can tell you that both MEP programs are 32bit and that they still have a P2 serial number.

I just installed MEP15 from 2009.

When I drag an MP4 or an MTS file to the timeline, MEP15 closes without any warning. My personal opinion is that MEP14 but also MEP2014 are not compatible with Windows 10|11. My advice, upgrade MMS 2025. See Movie Studio: Creative Video Editing. Easier than Ever. (magix.com)

Good luck with your decision,

Rob

Als een kwestie onoplosbaar lijkt, komt dat niet omdat je de oplossing niet ziet, maar omdat je het probleem niet ziet.

If an issue seems unsolvable, it is not because you do not see the solution, but because you do not see the problem.
