Cannot install to a different drive than "C"

Zoltan-Puskas wrote on 6/20/2024, 12:03 PM

Hell, I have limited space on my C drive so I'd like to install my new Movie Studio Platinum to a different drive. However, there is no option to do this. I tried doing this in Win11 by changing the default to D, but have been unsuccessful in this approach. How can I install this on my D drive? Thanks.

@Zoltan-Puskas I wouldn't, programs that aren't on the (C) drive don't always work properly, , I'd move all media files, pictures, video, everything you can from your (C) Drive to another drive, Windows - Settings - Storage - Temporary files delete as much as poss.

@Zoltan-Puskas Why how big is your (C) hard drive? Is it that full of Windows & programs that if you cleared out of the media you still wouldn't have room?

@Zoltan-Puskas @Gid

Although I'm still running Win 10 I have ALL my Magix programs installed on D:\ and all run without problem!

@Zoltan-Puskas

Did you check carefully ALL the screens which appear as you are beginning the installation? One offers "Custom", which is where you can select your choice of drive for the program installation.

However, it is most definitely NOT advisable to install all the support files anywhere other than C:\, in my experience, though I understand it can be done.

@emmrecs Yes, but as I said they don't always work properly, they may for you but maybe not for others, It can depend on the speed of the 'other' drive reg performance, or as you mention 'support files' - future updating & management of those files can be problematic for use of a better word, It is generally recommended to have Windows & programs on the same drive. That's why I said I wouldn't but I didn't say you couldn't.

@Gid

It is generally recommended to have Windows & programs on the same drive

I have to ask: recommended by whom?

From personal experience, updating and management of those files is very rarely an issue.

@emmrecs I use words words like generally & don't always, I haven't made any definitive statements & you yourself in that last comment say 'rarely' which negates the question that there is never any problems. So stop playing word games!

@Gid

I beg to differ on the statement about word games, implying this is a matter of semantics.

I merely wish to establish what you would use as evidence of that general recommendation since I believe, and my personal experience has shown over a number of years of doing this, that there is no inherent problem whatsoever in having Windows and Programs installed on different drives! Yes, the user needs to monitor the installation of programs, to ensure they are placed where they are desired to be, but to me, that is a price worth paying to ensure, as far as possible, the smooth running of one's computer!

Fundamentally, I am concerned that your statement about that general recommendation could cause confusion and concern to users who may have Programs and Windows stored on different drives and may begin to think they have "done something wrong".

Hi

. . . . I have limited space on my C drive . . . .

Is this a laptop and is the second drive internal?

As @emmrecs has commented, the program can be installed on an alternative drive, however:

  • The second drive should be an internal drive - using a USB external drive is not recommended as they are prone to 'turning off' when idle, which can cause runtime errors and crashes.

  • There are still some components of the program which must be installed on the C:\ drive and these must not be moved to another drive.

If the computer is not a laptop then, is an upgrade to a bigger, eg 2 TB drive an option ? The smaller drive could be cloned to a larger one so all programs etc remain available.

@emmrecs

Hi Jeff.

In all fairness to @Gid, I too had heard that 'wisdom' in the earlier days of Windows along with increasing the page file allocation if you didn't have enough ram and setting the computer to adjust for best performance of programs over background services, the settings of which are still accessible within Windows but do little to improve things any more since coming away from smaller drives, larger amounts of memory and no longer relying on PATA drives and HDDs in general.

Early versions of Photoshop and Cubase for me were a complete PITA to try to get running if not put on the C: drive.

One of the things we have been doing recently is setting MMS and VPX Graphics performance preference within Windows to High Performance but lately since upgrading my GPU that seems to have made little difference. Would that be true of all systems? I don't know.

But I agree with @johnebaker as if you ever have to reinstall Windows you would also have to reinstall some or most of the programs on the other drive as well or they may not run or run correctly.

Just as an added thought, if the C: drive is lacking space there may be problems arising anyway when the program writes its temp files while the program runs.

Ray.

Thanks, everyone. It's a desktop. My "C" drive is a 250GB SSD. I have "D" and "E" drives that are 1TB each. I run programs on all drives. It's just that some programs don't offer the option to install on a drive other than "C". I moved as many programs as I could off the "C", and did install Movie Studio Platinum. I now have 13GB of free space on "C", so I know this won't make it too far. I'll have to delete MSP to free more space.
