Cannot get it to work - Program closes and videos unplayable

Sharon-Kitson wrote on 2/6/2022, 5:53 AM

Hi all - I hope you can help me please. I've Just purchased Magix Video Easy to convert some old VHS-C tapes to digital.

The program imports perfectly and I can optimise it etc. When I export it to mp4 at the recommended settings (DVD quality 720x576 PAL)

The first problem is that when the program finishes exporting it just closes down, doesnt save the project and only sometimes saves the video file. It also seems to be very slow at exporting, especially as my PC is quite high spec.

The second problem is that the end file is unplayable. PotPlayer reports 'Cannot play the media file. Unable to get video/audio data'. Windows video viewer and VLC simply say the file is corrupt or not a supported type. The imported and untouched file is perfectly playable, just not the exported one.

Computer Spec - i9 10850K, 64Gb DDR4 PC3600, RTX3060 12Gb Graphics, Samsung 980 Pro NVME S2 2Tb. Windows 11 Pro. All drivers are up to date.

Please can someone help?

Thanks

@Sharon-Kitson

Hi Sharon and welcome to the user to user forums.

Most of the people who respond to the questions here on the forum don't use Video Easy so answers may be more educated guesses rather than first hand experience.

Having said that none of the Magix products available at present are actually certified to run on Windows 11. Some have run some of the editing programs with varying degrees of success. Video Easy is certified for Win 8 and Win 10.

There is nothing wrong with your computer spec but there could be problems with the program interfacing with Windows 11 or a codec could be missing.

It may be worth downloading MediaInfo and seeing what data is actually showing in the exported files that won't play. To me it sounds like the program is exporting files containing no data at all. If that is the case a simple right click on one of the files will bring up the option to see the file size.

Ray.

Thanks Ray. I'm surprised to hear that - it's the 2022 version and we're in 2022 and Windows 11 is what everyone will be upgraded to. But my PC upgraded just a couple of days ago and the first attempt was on Windows 10 and it did the same thing, so I don't think it is a Windows problem

File size of the exported file is what you would expect - just over 1Gb for a 24 minute clip

Strangely - if I open the captured video (not the exported one) in Vegas Pro then it renders perfectly and about 30x faster than Video Easy does. The exported file plays perfectly so I do think this is a Video Easy issue not a codec one.

I've installed mediainfo as suggested. Not really sure how to use it but for the file I ripped today it says:

General
Complete name                            : C:\Users\Colin\Documents\MAGIX\Video easy Rescue Your Videotapes!\Video Project 2022-02-06.MP4

Codec ID                                 : isom (isom/avc1)

Does that help at all?

Hi

We need all the MediaInfo data, there are many details missing - see this tutorial on setting up MediaInfo in order to get all the data from your video file - you probably have done this already.

Hi

Are the computer graphic drivers up to date? for the:

  • Intel UHD 630 the current version is 30.0.1.1069

  • RTX 3060 the current version is 511.65 (30.0.15.1165)

In the program settings is the Intel UHD 630 selected in the Playback tab if not set it to use this GPU.

Thanks John. All drivers are up to date

There is no option in the program to select a particular graphics card

Unfortunately the mediainfo link you sent shows as broken on the trutorial so I can't do that, but I'll see if I can find a tutorial somewhere

@Sharon-Kitson

Hi

There is an issue with the Magix media servers - I have uploaded a copy of the tutorial to here.

If the one option in the Program settings, Playback option, see image here for what I get, is the RTX 3060, this would suggest that the Intel iGPU either

  1. has no monitor plugged in to the onboard video output

If you are working with a single monitor and it has a second input, a work around is to connect this 2nd input to the onboard monitor output. For dual monitors, try plugging one of them into the onbard monitor output

  2. is disabled in the BIOS settings of the computer

How you turn this on depends on the BIOS in your computer.

Thanks again John

There is no Program Settings option available (But see below)

When launching Video Easy it launches the new project dialogue and does not allow access to the menu items. You can only access those once the media is imported, and there is no Program Settings option

No I don't use the onboard graphics when the RTX 3060 is so massively superior. The intel is enabled in BIOS but no monitor connected as I use the RTX 3060. I'll investigate using a second cable though

Update. If I export to mp2 instead of the recommended mp4 then the program doesn't crash and shows 'exported successfully'. Once this has happened the window closes but the program doesn't close and then I can access the Program Settings (very strange way of doing it). The settings do indeed show my 3060 or compatibility mode but no option to use the onboard gpu (presumably as there is no monitor attached)

The 29 minute clip took just over an hour to export to mp2 compared to Vegas Pro which took 8 minutes to render the same clip into mp4

Thanks for the link to the mediainfo tutorial, I'll have a look

A further update - I watched the medainfo tutorial and already had it set up that way. The info I posted previously is the only info medainfo shows for those files (presumably why they don't play), yet they are full size

Hi

. . . . The info I posted previously is the only info medainfo shows for those files (presumably why they don't play), yet they are full size . . . .

This would suggest the file header is corrupted which as you say does not let it play.

OT as Vegas products have there own forum here, I assume that the Video capture in Vegas cannot see the USB capture device - my older version of Vegas Pro cannot. You may want to ask this question in the Vegas forums.

Thanks John. I bought the Magix Video Easy as a bundle with the USB capture card so was hoping to use them together. Vegas Pro does see the capture device but doesn't see any output from it

I had the same issue as Sharon-Kitson. I went into File, Settings, Program, and then checked the video card in use the application; my "better" card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX745) was automatically selected, so I looked to see what other choices I had, which included the video card built-into the motherboard (Intel HD Graphics 630) as well as "Compatibility". I tried both, and both work, though it seems to take longer to process the video (which is far better than getting to the end and saying, NOPE!). I also checked my drivers, and they appear to be up to date (per Dell). I hope this helps anyone else who may be having the same issue. Seems like an odd solution, but it works reliably.
