Cannot burn movies to: DVD, Blu-ray or AVHD on Movie Studio 2023 Suite

David-Kendall wrote on 12/6/2022, 4:42 AM

Since purchasing Movie Studio 2023 Suite I have never been able to burn my movies to: DVD, Blu-ray or AVHD. I always get errors. errors which I never got on my previous version of Magix (Movie Edit pro 2014).

There are a couple of issues here - the main issue is it looks like you are trying to burn an AVCHD disc to a standard DVD dual layer disc.

It is possible to burn Blu-Ray to a DVD disc, I do this often, providing the movie is no longer than about 25 - 30 mins.and the burner must support writing to Blu-Ray disc. I would expect AVCHD to behave the same.

What make/model is the disc burner, and does it support Blu-Ray burning and DL discs?

I would advise:

Using DVD-RW or BD-RE discs for the initial burn, for initial checking, this saves making 'coasters'. You may find errors in the movie that need further editing. Once the movie is OK the rewriteable disc can be copied to permanent disc using a program such as ImgBurn (free) or Nero, it may also be possible to use Windows Explorer. The rewriteable can be erased for re-use when done.

Use good quality DVD-R - they are more reliable / have fewer issues than DVD+R for DVD, or BD-R discs for Blu-Ray.

@David-Kendall

Welcome to the Magix user to user public forums, so confidential data like your computer Device and Product IDs should never be posted here. Hence I have edited your post.

On a very quick read of your burn log I notice the following error messages:

2022/12/06 09:56:11 [WARNING] [DiscMaker]: DBK CBurnDevSupport::InvalidateDiscInfo(): 16 - burn support - invalid device.
2022/12/06 09:56:13 [FATAL]   [DiscMaker]: !!! AVSDK ReadRecorderDiscInfo() calling AvVolMountDev(): 208 - disc is not empty !!!
2022/12/06 09:57:11 [FATAL]   [DiscMaker]: !!! AVSDK ReadRecorderDiscInfo() calling AvVolMountDev(): 208 - disc is not empty !!!

Also, the last lines of the log:

2022/12/06 10:07:45 [FATAL]   [DiscMaker]: !!! DBK CBurnDevSupport::BurnProject(): 224 - write error occurred on disc !!!
2022/12/06 10:07:45 [FATAL]   [DiscMaker]: !!! DBK BurnProject: 224 - write error occurred on disc !!!

Can you tell us rather more about the actual disc burner you are using and the discs themselves (type, manufacturer, capacity)? It appears from the log that you are attempting burn from an .iso image (which is always advised here!) to a D/L disc as an AVCHD project. Is that correct? If so, it would be unusual to burn such a project to a dual-layer disc; I'm not even sure it is possible to do so!

When I am wanting to create DVDs etc. I use MMS or VPX to create an .iso image and then either Ashampoo Burning Studio (paid for) or ImgBurn (free) to create the actual disc(s). In particular I find ImgBurn to be ideal for creating Dual-Layer discs since it has additional user-selectable settings to select the "layer-break" at a point where the very slight discontinuity is going to be hardly noticeable.

Thankyou both for your answers.

I am using a BISCON external Blu-ray drive:

'Super Slim Drive-USB3.0

Model No. :ODP95-SU3

Power Supply DC 5V

Maximum Speed 5Gbps

Regarding the Disc usage, I have tried:

-Verbatim BD-R 25GB Storage

-Verbatim DVD+R DL 8.5GB Storage

Regarding Movie type:

I have tried putting DVD to DVD+R, AVHD to DVD+R, Blu-ray to BD-R, AVHD to BD-R and AVHD to BD-R,

None have worked.

Ideally i just want HD Movie to play on a Blu-ray player, so have assumed Blu-ray to BD-R is best option?

I have tried Burning a movie that is 1 hour but also tried burning a movie that is just 4 mins on its own, but to no avail.

Hi

Thanks for the information.

. . . . Ideally i just want HD Movie to play on a Blu-ray player, so have assumed Blu-ray to BD-R is best option? . . . .

That is correct.

. . . . ODP95-SU3 . . . .

Have you successfully burned BD discs to this drive before?

If not then this may be faulty.

Assuming you mean this drive.

It seems you have exceeded the maximum burn speed for that type of disc.

@CubeAce Yes that's the correct drive.

so Burning on any disc should be set to the speed that the Drive can handle? (i thought that would be automatic)

so burning to a BD-R the burn speed should be set to x6 or below?

all the USB ports on my desktop are SS5 so should be fine with the USB 3.0 Drive

(Apologies, I'm not too tech savvy!)

David-Kendall wrote on 12/7/2022, 4:53 AM

@johnebaker no I haven't. i will try again using comments above and if it still does not work, i'll replace the Blu-ray drive (absolutely fuming if it was just that all along!) £80 spent on that + a lot of 'coasters'.....

@David-Kendall

Hi David.

Yes the speed needs not to exceed the recommended maximum burn speed. It can be lower if you don't trust the disks to be of high enough quality. This is due to the 'pits' created by the laser has to be more finely focused due to the increased amount of data being burned. The fact it is not automated may be down to the drive not having dedicated drivers. Of that I'm not sure.

Ray.

I never burn a DVD at greater than x4.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

I have tried to burn to disc again at 2x speed and have also tried to do it via ImgBurn but neither worked so have logged a request to replace my faulty External Drive!

Thankyou all for your help

Hi David.

You may want to go for a burner that is a certified External USB 3. 0 Blu-ray BDXL/UHD Recorder such as this one.

Since you also tried to create the disc using ImgBurn did you choose to save the log which it writes as it is "working"? If so, can you post it here since it might well reveal what the problem is.

Hi

. . . . so have logged a request to replace my faulty External Drive! . . . .

I would also highly recommended you get a good quality branded drive eg LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, ASUS etc. The ODP95-SU3 is an unbranded generic drive of dubious quality, judging by some posts, I have found on the Internet..
