Can't seem to edit MTS files in Magix movie 2021

Les-Kendrick wrote on 4/7/2021, 5:20 AM

Using Windows 10, Movie Edit Pro 2012 Premium updated to 20.0.1.80, SD card Class 10 95mb/s

Can't seem to edit MTS files when placed to the timeline, the clip jumps/ stops and starts therefore unable to edit. Have tried straight from the SD card from the computer/video camera/card reader nothing seems to work? Upgraded to edit pro 2021 thinking there would be no issues as under the AVCHD medium. Any help would be appreciated?

Hi Les.

It's not wise to try to use an SD card as a drive as the sequential read write speeds are just not up to it. Ideally they should be on either a separate internal drive and not your C: drive or an external USB3 hard drive or SSD. Transfer rates can sometime get up to 133MB/s or higher. Check with task manager to see if activity of the drive seems high or maxing out.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for your reply

Please see task manager screen shot taken a few moments ago, hope this helps.

Hi Les.

How much system memory is Task manager reporting? That can't be correct. Even if you can't use any hardware acceleration that is hardly enough memory to run Windows 10 let alone a video editing package on top of that.

A three core AMD processor? That is 19 years old. Did you look at MEP 2021 hardware requirements?

I think your PC will just not cope. Sorry.

For future reference, to take a screen shot, use the 'print screen' button on your keyboard and then open Windows paint and paste image into paint. Then 'save as' a jpg. Much quicker and better than using a camera.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the email,

If i dispense with all the unwanted files/photo's/videos off my D drive would this help the memory situation or is it kaput?

Les.

Hi Les.

I don't think it would matter one bit unfortunately.

When you took that screen shot you didn't even have Movie Edit Pro running.

My guess is if you had, Task Manager would have shown a lot more maxing out.

Try it and see.

Hi Les

To be blunt your computer is not capable of running Movie Edit Pro 2021 properly, it is well below the minimum specification required.

Depending on your needs with respect to the resolution and format of the videos you are currently, and may be in the future, working with, eg 2.7K, 4K UHD, the system specification for MEP 2021 requires at least a quad core Intel processor with integrated graphics, eg the UHD 620 - or better for video resolutions greater than 1920 x 1080, at least 8GB, preferably 16GB, of memory (RAM) and plenty of storage space eg minimum of 2TB hard drive for the video projects and at least a 512GB drive for Windows and program installations.

Hi Les.

Basically I'm surprised Movie Edit Pro is running without crashing. It is such an old system for the program to work with. If you try to lower the bottleneck by say upgrading the amount of ram then the CPU will overload more next.

At present what I think is happening is when the system is running low on ram its using the C: drive as additional ram which is a lot slower and is adding to the drive activity you are seeing. But if you add extra ram and relieve that problem then it will push the processor to its limits. At present you may be wearing out your SSD prematurely and shortening its normal lifespan due to the excessive read and write cycles. Making the processor work that hard could also be pushing its temperature to uncomfortable levels. A lot will depend on what type of CPU cooler you have. Apart from that, the cost of old memory modules no longer in production will cost more than new ones on a new system. New memory will not be compatible with your motherboard.

It's a vicious modern day cycle of upgrading but a credit to you that you have managed to keep a relatively old machine in working order. When this system was conceived Windows 10 and its demands on performance was not even in the calculations.

For me, I bought a new camera but the files were too demanding for my software. Then I found the new software would not run on my old machine which was made around 2008.

Sorry to be the bringer of such news. I never enjoy typing these responses.
