Can't record with "Rescue your vinyl..."

I  have bought the "Rescue Your Vinyl & Tapes..." package and  USB phone preamp.
I am trying to record from a minicassette player to my PC, and have plugged the cassette player into the preamp using single jacks (from "earphone" on the cassette to "line in" on the preamp), and plugged the preamp into my PC using a USB cable.
I then can't get past first base to begin recording as the program does not seem to recognise the audio input.
Under "Import" and "settings" and "audio input" I get six options, including these two which seem to refer to the preamp
(i) Line (2 - Magix phono preamp (PA
(ii) Microphone (2 - Magix phono PreA
When i choose either of them by clicking OK, and then press record and play my cassette there is no recording picked up by the software.
The only audio input option that seems to produce any effect at all is the first one on the drop-down list, "Integrated Microphone Array". That at least seems to start a recording but it does not record anything from my cassette recorder.

Hi

. . . . from "earphone" on the cassette . . . .

This is not the ideal source for the audio signal - does the cassette player have a 'line out' or something similar other than the earphone socket?

If you only have the earphone out - did you set the playback volume level on the cassette so that the program volume peak meters are just staying in the green?

The Magix phono preamp line input is the correct one to select.
