can't prevent multiple copies of programme starting

Stephen-Last wrote on 8/28/2023, 4:03 AM

I have Movie Edit Pro Plus from 2021 which I have not used as I do not do any movie work - it came with Photo and Graphic Designer. I opened it yesterday as I have a DVD I wanted to convert to MP4 format and tyhought it might do that. I now find that whenever my computer starts it opens as many as a dozen full screen copies of MEPP with a centre box saying it is opened from my system user name, do I want to proceeed? The only way it seems possible to get rid of thse and do anything else is by clsing each instance in turn via Windows Task Manager. There does not even seem to be a "close" facility anywhere on the screen. How do I stop this happening?

@Stephen-Last

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

Your problem is one I have never seen before, I think!

As a first suggestion for how to possibly correct it, have you tried Restarting your computer (via the Shut Down or sign out option but selecting Restart). Do NOT simply Shut Down! The difference is that Shut Down saves your existing configuration "as is" and then reloads it when you start the computer again; Restart does NOT save that configuration but, in essence, loads it in its vanilla state.

If that does not remove the problem have you checked in Task Manager, the Startup tab, whether anything Magix is listed there? I have a number of Magix programs installed and none appear on that Startup tab. If any do, you could right-click on them and choose the Disable option.

Do post back and let us know whether, or not, either of these suggestions helped!

Thanks, will try that!

Thanks, the "restart rather than shutdown" seems to have fixed it ..... so far! Task manager did not have it showing in the startup list, but multiple copies in the running apps. Just FYI I have an image of the screen at startup with the problem. (Left side, I have

an extended screen with laptop screen on the right (hence the 2 cats - wallpaper!)

Emmrecs (Jeff), started Ok today, no sign of it, but after laptop wnet to sleep it was there again - 2 instances! Weird.

@Stephen-Last

I assume from what you write that you had not closed MEPP before you put your laptop to sleep. Is that correct? If so, it seems that waking it up causes the already-open instance to wake up but also to trigger a second instance.

Could you try closing MEPP before putting the computer to sleep but also checking in Task Manager that it definitely was closed before computer hibernation? I ask because it is not unknown for Magix products to take some time to fully close (certain configuration and other files need to be updated before closure).

However, that would not account for multiple copies of the program trying to open, but it might ensure that there was not one running when the computer wakes up.

Personally, I never put my computer to sleep; at the end of a working day I fully power it down. However, the requirement that MEPP was fully closed before shut down would still apply here, for the reasons I gave earlier about the difference between Shut down and Restart.

Unfortunately that assumption is wrong. It was not running at all, and the computer had been tunred off overnight. I had done the restart rather than shutdown as you suggested yesterday, which as I said yesterday seemed to have fixed the problem. I didn't start MEPP this morning, hence my initial message. I have my laptop set to screen off after 10 minutes and sleep after 15 minutes when on mains power but no activity. MEPP just came on again I'm not 100% after a screen off or sleep - not sure which, with 2 instances this time. I could close one from the icon at the bottom of the screen (the tray?) but not the second which remains stuck on "create project". By closing that box I can then close the programme. Most strange.... I could just uninstall it I guess, that should fix it!

Hi

The issues you are having sound typical of Windows not waking sleeping programs, and possibly hardware as well, correctly.

I have my laptop set to never go to sleep, the screen off time set to 30 mins and the USB ports, I use external drive(s) for resources, set to always on when on mains power to avoid these issues.

Hi.

There is one odd thing I have noticed using MMS or VPX, and that is on my system, Windows Task Manager always shows how many times the program has been opened since the computer was last shut down. If or how that could be related I have no idea.
