Can't play HEVC (hvc1) files in Video Pro X?

wkuk wrote on 4/16/2021, 12:04 PM

I just purchased panasonic S5 and tried importing 10 bit mp4 (hvc1) file to a timeline but there is no video, I can only hear audio playing. The files play just fine in windows media player. Any one has any suggestions how to fix this? I am on the latest version of Video Pro X as of this writing. 8 bit files in (avc1) play just fine.

Hi

The issue you are having may be because the Intel integrated GPU is not enabled and according to the Nvidia Graphics matrix, the NVidia M1000M does not support HEVC (h.265) decoding or NVENC for HEVC encoding.

Do you have Lenovo Vantage installed?

If so set the GPU mode to Hybrid and try importing the video again - the Intel iGPU should take care of decoding and encoding to HEVC.

Hi

the NVidia M1000M does not support HEVC (h.265) decoding or NVENC for HEVC encoding.

And the HD530 Intel GPU does not support Quicksync HEVC 10bit decoding and encoding over 30fps.

Can you analyse the camera file with Media Info and paste the text/tree output into a reply, or upload a few seconds of unedited footage to dropbox?

@Scenestealer @johnebaker @wkuk

Hi wkuk.

The reason for the file information request from Peter is in case there are any other unseen surprises with the encoding of the file. For instance, if the camera made files that had a variable frame rate, that could cause a problem but also to see if you could change the files to a lower frame rate using Handbrake so your system could use the files you have already recorded by converting to a lower constant frame rate.

If we had access to a short clip to download we could verify it works on our systems that are fully compatible with the program. It does not have to be Dropbox. It could be any on line file sharing site as long as it allows downloads.

It was a good catch from Peter about the frame rate limitation of the Intel HD530 GPU and John's knowledge on the nvidia chip. If John's suggestion still doesn't work it will be because of Peters' information about the Intel GPU.

However, not all is lost if the file can be converted with Handbrake, but a clip would be handy to test and in future you stick to frame rates at or below 30fps.

but there is no video, I can only hear audio playing

Did you tried to disabling hardware acceleration under VPX12 (18.0.1.95)?

Under VPX 12 I have no problems to import videos files issued from a Panasonic Lumix DC-S5. Videos in UHD MP4 / HEVC 10 bits with these parameters.

Hi DeDe

Nice of you to visit.

It may work in your case because you have recorded your files with a 4:2:0 Colour Sampling and Wkuk may be recording with 4:2:2...........hmm......maybe not, as I can not see HEVC 10bit 4:2:2 in the bewildering list of specifications @CubeAce linked to.

I think disabling HWA for playback may help, as you have suggested.

@Scenestealer

Hi Peter.

The file specs for the camera say 4:2:0 at 8 bit and 4:2:2 at 10 bit.

I think between you and John you have found the possible cause. That the system is not coping with HEVC with files recorded faster than 30fps. (Or possibly using 4:2:2: 10 bit)

The problem with buying any new camera is that older supporting hardware or software can no longer keep up with the demands of the files produced. I have suffered this myself at least twice in my own lifetime.

Here is the file spec of the mp4 (hvc) file. When I disabled hardware acceleration in VPX as suggested, play back worked although quite choppy, Is there any recommended settings or proxy workflow within VPX that can be done to improve the playback performance of these files. The Panasonic S5 can also record in MOV (AVC Intra) codec but that apparently requires paid activation in VPX and I am not sure if it would run much smoother?

@wkuk

Hi.

I can't see anything in the file that should cause the program any problems but I think John EB and Peter between them have found the solution that your machine specs are really below par to handle the files easily. The bit rate itself is relatively low for such a file but the computational power needed to decode it and re-code it is too much without the help of the relevant GPUs. The fact VPX is working once you have disabled hardware acceleration and now works but not to spec seems to verify that.

Moving to another file format may help but may not. Files that only use I frames tend to be very large. You can only try but really it probably needs to have a more updated Intel GPU processor in my opinion.

You could try to render bits of the project using the tiny lightning symbol in the main track editor but it will probably tell you it doesn't need it after analysing the tracks.

Thank you all for responding. The only way to play HEVC on my machine is to use proxy file. I also need to work with MOV ( AVC) 10 bit files (see sample specs below) but every time I import this file to VPX it tells me that I need to buy an All Intra Codec, why? Also why is it priced in British Pounds if I purchased the software in $ US ?

I would personally be very wary of using the mov. codec in Windows with a newer camera as the last version of QuickTime for Windows was released some time ago and has not been updated by Apple for a few years now. It may not have the newer variations of the codec within its wrapper. Really you need an Apple machine and operating system to guarantee success with mov.files in my opinion. My cameras can also record in mov, but I steer clear of it personally. I think camera manufacturers only give the choice so both Windows and Mac users have a choice of recording format.

Also the bit rate of the file has jumped significantly more than doubling the rate of the previous file. Even with the codec I think your machine will not cope.

I really think it is time for you to supply two files (one of each type you have supplied data for) for us to test to see if even we can get them to run on our machines and whether we get the same request for an additional codec.

Hi

. . . .  import this file to VPX it tells me that I need to buy an All Intra Codec, why? . . . .

Some codecs are licensed by third party manufacturers hence the fee for the AVI Intra codec - it is stated on the systems requirement page for VPX

I agree with @CubeAce regarding the MOV video file format - as far as Windows support for this format is concerned - there is none. Apple took the decision many years ago to no longer support the Windows version of Quicktime.

The analysis of the second video clip also shows it is 4:2:2 format as @Scenestealer has suspected above.

Unfortunately I do not have any 4:2:2 10 bit Quicktime encoded test files to check if they can be converted to a more acceptable format.

Hi

The analysis of the second video clip also shows it is 4:2:2 format as @Scenestealer has suspected above.

Also the Format Profile is 4:2:2@L5.2 and the HD530 GPU on the Skylake 6700HQ only supports Quicksync Decode / Encode up to L5.1 with AVC.

I am not sure why VPX is asking for an Intra Codec with the second file as it has a GOP which contains I and P frames which is not Intra frame. It may be that it is just sensing a Professional level file. I got this message recently with a .mxf file that was definitely not Intra frame.

I agree with you Peter, the VPX should not be asking to purchase this codec as it is not intra frame file. I also installed lightworks and davinci resolve on same machine to test it and the playback of 4:2:2 10 bit MOV file works with those NLE's.

I have added a link below to download the sample file

I downloaded the linked file, opened it in VPX12 and was immediately asked to buy the Intra codec, at a cost of £59.99!!! I'm afraid I didn't pursue this any further.

When I clicked to cancel the purchase screen, VPX told me that Quicktime player was not installed, which it is, but obviously it is that last Windows version.

The file opened and played, audio only, in my default video file player, Cyberlink PowerDVD 17 (so not the latest version).

Hi wkuk,

Thanks for sharing your sample.

Analysis with another utility than MediaInfo gives the same information that you provided.

When I wanted to analyze the GOPs structure, my utility (Schutter Encoder) indicated that only an I frame was referenced, which I have never seen on an AVC encoded file and my utility freeze for the first time...

Secondly, I opened your file in VPX12.
Warning message indicating that the AVC Intra program pack will now be downloaded and installed.

The AVC intra program was successfully installed and for FREE. Possible reason for free of charge is that I use VEGAS softwares from MAGIX. But it's just an idea.

Finally your file is played without problem (video and audio).

Regards.

DéDé.

Hi Everyone

It looks like this may be a bug in VPX 12 and possibly VPX 11

The sample file @wkuk provided and all the 10 bit files I have, with 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 format, want the AVI-Intra codec despite the files have a 'normal' GOP structure.

I tested the same sample files in VPX 8 and they all imported OK, including @wkuk sample file, with no request for Quicktime to be installed (it is not).

If anyone else has VPX 8 can you replicate this?

I will also tag in @browj2 .

Hi DéDé.

I assume this Vegas product was not the cheaper Studio version.

The file only plays on VLC Media player on my machine. I get the same request to visit the shop for the needed codec. Glad to see you had it and it worked.

The idea of buying separate codecs on the cheaper programs is to keep costs down for those that don't need it as the codecs are licensed from the developers, as explained in the manual.

Hi John.

If it is not needed then why is DéDé able to play it in his version of VPX once the codec is in place?

Did VPX 8 come with QuickTime? Some of my other older programs did.

Hi John EB,

I no longer have VPX8 installed. In VPX12, I was asked to pay to purchase the AVCIntra Encoder Upgrade. The file loaded in VPX7, but there was no video, only terrible audio.
