Can't open MS15 files in Movie Studio Platinum 2022

TrekT wrote on 1/3/2022, 9:28 AM

I upgraded my Movie Studio Platinum 15 to Movie Studio Platinum 2022. This was done via a prompt from MS15, but I can't open any of my old files. Not even when I try "any file" option.

Am I doing something wrong or is this just a totally new and incompatible product, and if so, why offer it as an "upgrade" when it isn't.

Hi

Movie Studio 2022 can import old Movie Studio .vf files - which method did you use?

File, Open project

or

File, Manage project, Import movie, Vegas Movie Studio (*.vf)

Do note that when the project imports the import will be the basic edits only, effects etc will not be imported - Magix are working on this.

I have tried both methods. Neither works. When I try open project I get "the file format of xxxxxx.vf" cannot be read.
When I try import movie there is no option for "Vegas Movie Studio" only "MAGIX Movie File. (*.mvd)"

I just downloaded the program yesterday. It should be latest version but I tried what you suggested and nothing worked.

In general I feel like I have been tricked. This isn't an update to Movie Studio Platinum 15.0. This is some other program entirely. Even if I can get it it to have limited imports of old files (which still looks unlikely) everything is different. I have spent years with the MS family and learned how to use it, the keys, etc. Then it prompts me for an update, I buy it, and now have this totally useless thing. I really just want my money back.

I downloaded a trial of Vegas Pro, that is familiar. That works like I understand. I would be willing to buy the upgrade for that. But now just want my money back before I do anything.

They should not have these prompts to users of the old program to 'upgrade' and sell them this. It feels dishonest. Sorry to rant but I guess I just feel like I have been conned right now.

Hi.

I'm sorry you feel this way but it is understandable as the whole thing could have been explained a lot clearer at the time.

That topic was covered on the Vegas forums with solutions though.

Perhaps posting there may help you resolve your problem. A cross-grade offer may still be possible. I don't know for sure.

Thanks Guys. I also submitted a ticket and got this response...

We have decided to discontinue VEGAS Movie Studio in its known form. In return, we want to introduce you to a new product, based on our beloved Movie Edit Pro Infusion Engine, called Movie Studio 2022. Therefore, currently only rough Movie Studio 17 projects can be imported. Projects from older programs cannot be imported. However, since you can still use your old Movie Studio program, you can still finish unfinished projects there.

That's fine, discontinuing products is their right. But have a pop-up every time I open the product asking me to "upgrade" to a different product. That is NOT an upgrade. That is deceptive to say the least.

They should be pushing people to Vegas Edit, that seems to be a real actual upgrade to MS Platinum.

I will try to get a refund. We will see how that goes.

This has been discussed many times over in the last 6 months, in both this forum and the Vegas forum, since Vegas Creative Software dropped further development of Vegas Movie Studio.

A little researching and visit to either forum to see the pinned topics regarding Movie Studio would have warned you about this.

Hopefully you will get sorted with Magix.

Actually, it is. You just don't recognize it. MEP/MS has much more to offer than Vegas MS ever did, starting with multiple movies (timelines), something Vegas users can only dream about.

I figured it out only after buying. It didn't occur to me that this 'upgrade' from Movie Studio Platinum 15 to Movie Studio Platinum 2022 would be for a totally different product. Not everyone keeps up with the behind the scenes moving for every piece of software they use. It's not reasonable to assume this foreknowledge for those simply clicking the 'upgrade' button.

@browj2

Actually, it is. You just don't recognize it. MEP/MS has much more to offer than Vegas MS ever did, starting with multiple movies (timelines), something Vegas users can only dream about.

That all may be true but it isn't an 'upgrade' in terms of software. When you buy a new version of any given software you expect to know how to use it except for new features. Quick keys remain the same etc. You expect it to be able to open previous versions. That is industry standard. Yes this software may be superior, but it is by no means an 'upgrade'. All I say is they should be much clearer in letting people know this before buying. I know I am not the first to say this but the fact that it keeps happening shows they have a problem.

Anyway I am going to get a refund and look into getting Vegas Edit. I guess I just got used to the program and don't want to learn a whole new system. I don't have time for that.

Thank you all for the feedback. I think this is resolved now. Just waiting for the refund and I will move on.

All I say is they should be much clearer in letting people know this before buying. I know I am not the first to say this but the fact that it keeps happening shows they have a problem.

I absolutely agree. I would be absolutely livid if the same happened to me without a huge flashing screen saying "be aware that 2022 is NOT an update/upgrade to Vegas Movie Studio". MEP may well be better than Vegas Movie Studio, but it shouldn't be sprung on people by stealth. I think it is unreasonable to expect to have to go onto a forum each time a program is "updated" juts to see what I'm going to get.

The brand damage that Magix has caused must be significant. Combined with what can only be described as a botched upgrade to their own products (VPX 13 and MEP 2022), it does make you wonder what is going on.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

I think we all totally agree with your view.

Even the new layout of the main Magix website promoting their products is still placing Movie Studio into the Vegas section of software with no mention of the changes to it's dropped heritage.

I could understand it if it was only the US website that did this where advertising laws are more lax but it seems to be the same on each regional website.

I am sure you will not be the last person to post here.

I do hope you get the cross grade offer.

Hi,

I have 2 bad news for you.

1.- Movie Studio 2022 (21.0.1.92) cannot open VF projects created in Vegas Movie Studio 15 16 and 17
VMS 2022 sends an alert message indicating that the VF file format cannot be read.
I confirm that this version is not functional for opening VF files and there is currently no update to resolve this shortcoming.

This is unacceptable when everything worked correctly on the previous version of Movie Studio 18 (18.1.0.24) which could open VF projects created under Vegas Movie Studio 15 16 and 17
Those created under version 14 could not be opened.

2.- For refund please read General Terms & Conditions from MAGIX SOFTWARE GMBH

Link: https://www.magix.com/int/terms-and-conditions/

In those T&Cs please note: "§ 3 CONSUMER CANCELLATION POLICY REGARDING DISTANCE SALES CONTRACTS Only for consumers who are habitually resident in a state that is a member of the EU or the EEA, this § 3 applies."

A friend residing in Canada has reported to me after trying to request a refund for Movie Studio 18.
Magix is officially denying refunds!

Hi,

Movie Studio 2022 can import old Movie Studio .vf files - which method did you use?
File, Open project
or
File, Manage project, Import movie, Vegas Movie Studio (*.vf)

What you mention is true under MEP 2022 (21.0.1.111).
These options do not exist under Movie Studio 2022 (21.0.1.92).

Useful? You have to decide. The the price that @CubeAce quoted is accurate for the upgrade from VMS to VP for a perpetual license.

Hi,

Please note that it's a limited licence for 2 years.

This is EXTREMELY poor form. Magix truly dropped the ball on this one and this is THE LAST "Upgrade" I will be falling for from what has turned out to be a truly pathetic company. There was a time when the original creators of the Movie Studio Suite gave a damn about their consumer base. Now, it is rather obvious by the bait and switch that is clearly allowing folks to fall into, there is no real care behind the intent of their offers. I side with all of those that believe the word "Upgrade" carries with it a presupposition that whatever file format (within some level of reason) you are "upgrading" from will be able to be read by what they are leading you into the "upgrade" to - in this case, Movie Studio 17 Suite to Movie Studio 2022. Even their naming convention is deceptive. Why would any reasonable thinking individual ever have to wonder that the program that is being offered by the company that makes the program you are currently using would not read the current format you have been using!?!!

The sad part is that they don't even make a stand-alone solution to convert what you have been working so diligently on into whatever their new format is. If they don't want to include the ability to read the older formats into their main product - fine. But at the least give us a heads-up during the purchase (as they call it, the "Upgrade") process. A company that would truly give a damn about the efforts that their customer put into the projects created by their own software would address this issue right out of the gate. In this case, it seems that they are not even addressing it "after the fact". Like I stated previously here, this is the last money this company will be getting out of us. We will find a NDE tool that is created, maintained, and that offers TRUE paths to upgrade by a company that actually supports the efforts that their clients put into the projects that their software creates.
