can't get cassette player to record stereo-it only records one channel

Brian-Talley wrote on 3/10/2022, 9:19 PM

Cassette player audio is only recording one channel into two channels in soundforge. All other devices CD, Blu-ray players/recorders record just fine. The cassette player is line in or USB. I've not experienced this before. Cassette is plugged in to desktop computer. Wondering why both channels are not recording.

Thanks for any help.

Brian.

@Brian-Talley

Hi

Is the cassette recorder capable of outputting stereo via line out or over USB?

@Brian-Talley, please state what version and build of SF you have. Read the 'Sticky' at the head for the main Sound Forge forum page.

As @johnebaker stated, check your source, cables and interface and that both channels are selected and working. Open SF "Options> Preferences> Audio" and confirm the settings there

If you are using SF Pro-16, when you select a 'New' file to record to, confirm the 'Layout' is set to Stereo.. The 'Layout' parameter is new to SF Pro-16 and for some reason, the default seems to be "Discrete #2".

Thank you for responding guys! I'm using Soungforge 12.1-Build 170...the cassette player has usb capability to a port on the computer and a line out (a "Y" rca cord to small stereo pin) to the sound card inputs on soundcard (at back of computer) from back of cassette player. Xps Desktop computer windows 10. It has been working fine for several years. then all of a sudden....this issue.Also computer has Soundblaster sound card Recon 3D PCle control panel with color female imputs (red, green, gold,black and orange).

Both sides of tape deck output the same way.I feel like i'm missing a simple thing or the machine (tape deck) is failing.

Checked microsoft sound mapper and, level meters and both channels are receiving only side of stereo image.

Both channels receive a signal but only one channel. External Blue=ray works fine.

Thank you johnebaker and rraud for helping out. The cords are 2 years old...the tape deck is 4 years old but hasnt seen a lot of work since covid. It's a Marantz PMD-300CP.

If you are using an analog line-in on your sound card, confirm the Windows sound settings (record) balance faders are at the same level for both channels. This is based on my Dell's Realtec sound card, other interfaces may be different. I am not sure about a USB sound source.

thanks again...but now i seemed to have lost recording device because i chose 24 bit 2 channel stereo...how do i get device back? It says that because i'm trying to record a file in soundforge. what happened?

@Brian-Talley

Hi

Assuming you are running Windows 10 check that the Windows settings, Privacy, Microphone, Allow desktop apps to access the microphone is turned on.

For best quality transfer of tapes to the computer if the Marantz is detected correctly and SF can see it use the USB connection.
